The exploration of the island of La Gomera in the Canary archipelago took me from its capital San Sebastián de la Gomera along the GM-1 highway to the small town of Hermigua located in the north of the island. I traveled along the inland mountain roads for a few kilometers and after passing through some tunnels and ups and downs I reached the highest point in this area where I stopped at one of the most beautiful viewpoints in La Gomera. Some large letters on a flat area on the side of the road gave me some first impressions and views of what I was going to find in this small town. The spectacle from above was fascinating, large mountains made walls facing east and the town was located in a canyon at the lowest part on the northern slope facing the nearby ocean.
Hermigua Mountains and Viewpoint
A mist called “calima” in these islands was dissipating to give way to a clear day as the hours passed. After stopping for a while at the viewpoint, I began the descent towards Hermigua with the intention of reaching its beach. The road crossed the town and allowed me to make different stops at the best points of the town. One of my first impressions was the feeling of being on another continent and it brought back memories of some trips to the American continent. I stopped in a large space where I could park and begin the tour of the town. I was absorbed by seeing those impressive V-shaped rock formations and how many houses were located very close to this place. Some houses were scattered and the area formed stairs where there were many crops, small colorful houses and native island vegetation.
Hermigua
A large recreation area in the town led me to a narrow and picturesque street that took me to the fields that were located below the convent. The sensation of observing from this point was impressive since it combined this agricultural part with the mountain wall that I saw in the background. The strong contrast of colors in the houses together with the white of some houses had me trapped in this adventure through the town of Hermigua. I noticed the stone terraces, constructions made to take advantage of the terrain in a stairway and to make the most of the land. The crops, plants and flowers gave me their best finery and colors in this part of the route.
The Convent Cultural Space
I arrived at the convent of San Pedro Apostol, a small chapel occupied a square and several small buildings of the convent and an old school located in the same place had me wandering around this area for a while. The white color was the predominant color in this place and contrasted with the green of the mountain slopes, palm trees and crops.
I headed towards a wider area of crops a little further down and continued my walk towards the beach. Hermigua continued to offer me beautiful views that changed greatly as I got closer to the sea. The terraces of banana and avocado trees along with other fruit trees gave me an idea of the agricultural production and livelihood of this place. The Convent of Saint Peter the Apostle
