The region known as “La Serena” in the autonomous community of Extremadura covers a fairly large area and is bathed in a large part by the Guadiana river as it passes through this land. I was in the south-central part of the province of Badajoz visiting this part of the community and trying to visit the main towns in this region. That day I left the capital of Cáceres in the sister province of the north to head along the EX-A4 motorway that would take me for a few kilometres to the area I had planned to visit. The towns of Don Benito and above all, what interested me and was going to be my goal was the nearby town of Villanueva de la Serena. Currently there is a great twinning between both cities and they are considering the possibility of joining them into a single town. There is a great controversy about this and points that have yet to be fully agreed upon, such as the name or other reasons why this merger is being delayed.
La región de denominada “La Serena” en la comunidad autónoma de Extremadura se extiende por una zona bastante amplia y bañada en una gran extensión por el rio Guadiana a su paso por esta tierra. Me encontraba en el centro sur de la provincia de Badajoz visitando toda esta parte de la comunidad y tratar de recorrer las poblaciones principales de esta comarca. Ese día salí de la capital cacereña en la provincia hermana del norte para dirigirme por la autovía EX-A4 que durante algunos kilómetros me llevaría hasta la zona que tenía previsto conocer. Las poblaciones de don Benito y sobre todo y lo que me interesaba e iba a ser mi meta era la cercana población de Villanueva de la Serena. Actualmente existe un gran hermanamiento entre ambas ciudad y están barajando la posibilidad de unirse en una sola villa. Hay una gran controversia sobre esto y puntos en que aun deben ponerse del todo de acuerdo, como el nombre u otros motivos por los cuales se está demorando esta fusión.
Villanueva de la Serena
At the entrance of the town you can see a large commercial area and even a main avenue with many of the most well-known and popular businesses in the country. The clue that this part of the town gave me was of a city with a large concentration of businesses and commerce like its neighbour Don Benito and it really seemed like an extension of this second town that opted to merge. I looked for a place to stay for the day and continue my route the next day and I must say that the hotel and hostel capacity surprised me by its high number. I left my things and then asked the owners of the guesthouse where I was what was most significant and what I should visit in this beautiful town.
En la entrada de la villa puede observar una gran zona comercial y aun avenida principal con muchos de los negocios más conocidos y populares del país. La pista que me daba esta parte de la villa era de una ciudad con una gran concentración de negocios y comercial como su vecina Don Benito y me pareció realmente como una prolongación de esta segunda villa que opta a fusionarse. Busque un lugar donde alojarme para pasar el día y seguir mi ruta al día siguiente y debo decir que la capacidad hotelera y de hostales me sorprendió por su elevado número. Deje mis cosas para luego preguntar a los dueños de la pensión donde estaba que era lo más significativo y que era lo que debería visitar en esta hermosa villa.
I proceeded to walk through the streets, visiting the church, the bell tower, the town hall and its central square. In this square I observed some architectural motifs that caught my attention. Those enormous spheres of veined marble on the ground caught my attention and for a few moments brought back some thoughts while I was enjoying a good cup of coffee on a nearby terrace. Talking to a person at the other table, he told me that I should visit the chapel and the grounds of the hermitage located on the outskirts of the nearby town of Don Benito and that it was a very busy place where a famous pilgrimage was also held.
Procedí a caminar por las calles, visitar la iglesia, el campanario, el ayuntamiento y su plaza central. En esta estuve observando algunos motivos arquitectónicos que llamaron mi atención. Esas enormes esferas de mármol veteado en el suelo captaron la misma y por unos instantes me trajeron algunos pensamientos mientras saboreaba una buena taza de café en una cercana terraza. Conversando con una persona en la otra mesa me comento que debería visitar la capilla y el recinto de la ermita situada a las afueras de la villa cercana de Don Benito y que era un lugar muy concurrido donde adema se celebraba una famosa romería.
As I was leaving the road that would take me to the hermitage, I could see a path or Stations of the Cross that would gradually bring me closer to the esplanade where the hermitage was located. When I arrived, I was lucky that it was open and that there were hardly any people there at that time, so I could see and visit it without being overwhelmed. Once again, and as is typical in this area of the country, the whitewash of the walls and the hermitage building itself captured my attention and stood out from a green landscape full of olive trees in a predominantly rural and agricultural area.
Ya saliendo por la carretera que me llevaría a la ermita pude observar un camino o vía crucis que me acercaría progresivamente a la explanada donde estaba situada la ermita. Al llegar tuve la suerte de que estaba abierta y que no había casi gente en ese momento para poderla ver y visitar sin agobios. Una vez más y como es típico en esta zona del país el blanco de la cal en muros y en el propio edificio de la ermita capturaba toda mi atención y destacaba de entre un paisaje verde lleno de olivos en una zona preferentemente rural y agrícola.
