Founded by Juan Carvajal in 1545, this city was the General Capital of Venezuela (from 1546 to 1548) and was also the economic and political center of the region. For this reason, El Tocuyo is also known as "The Mother City of Venezuela" and is of great importance to understand the history and culture of Venezuela.
Fundada por Juan Carvajal en 1545 esta ciudad fue la Capital General de Venezuela (desde el año 1546 hasta el 1548); y fue además, el centro económico y político de la región. Es por esto que al Tocuyo se le conoce también como "La Ciudad Madre de Venezuela" siendo de gran importancia para comprender la historia y cultura de Venezuela.
Among some of the traditions that take place during Holy Week in the city and that is widespread in some Latin American countries is the tour of the seven temples between the night of Holy Thursday and the morning of Good Friday.
A Catholic custom that dates back to colonial times, which consists of visiting seven different churches and praying in each of them to symbolize the accompaniment of the faithful to Jesus in each of his journeys from the night he was imprisoned until his crucifixion.
Entre alguna de las tradiciones que se realizan en esta Semana Santa en la ciudad y que es extendida en algunos países de América Latina es el recorrido por los siete templos entre la noche del Jueves Santo y la mañana del Viernes Santo.
Una costumbre católica que data de los tiempos de la colonia, y que consiste en visitar siete iglesias distintas y orar en cada una de ellas para así simbolizar el acompañamiento de los fieles a Jesús en cada uno de sus recorridos desde la noche en que fue apresado hasta su crucifixión

Old Bethlehem Temple | Antiguo Templo Belén
These Ruins are an Architectural Heritage of Venezuela and Latin America, founded in 1625 as the first Hospital of Venezuela, it belonged to the "Royal Hospitals" of the colony with the name of "San Juan de Dios y Nuestra Señora de Chinquiquirá". Later it functioned as a Psychiatric Hospital and finally as a religious Temple until the beginning of the XIX century.
Estas Ruinas son un Patrimonio Arquitectónico de Venezuela y de América Latina, fundado en 1625 cómo el primer Hospital de Venezuela, perteneció a los "Hospitales Reales" de la colonia con el nombre de "San Juan de Dios y Nuestra Señora de Chinquiquirá". Posteriormente funcionó como Hospital Psiquiátrico y finalmente como Templo religioso hasta principios del siglo XIX.
It survived several earthquakes, including those of 1812 and 1950 (in the latter), and locals say that on that very day a wedding took place inside the temple, collapsing part of the internal structure and leaving the couple and guests in the rubble.
Sobrevivió a varios terremotos, incluyendo los de 1812 y 1950 (en este último), cuentan propios de esta zona que justamente ese día se realizaba una boda dentro del templo, colapsando parte de la estructura interna y dejando a la pareja e invitados entre los escombros.
A toral arch still stands imposingly among the structure, representing the backbone of these ruins that were once one of the most important buildings in Venezuela during colonial times and whose vestiges remind us today of the grandeur that once dressed Tocuyo.
Un arco toral aún se alza imponen entre la estructura, representando la columna vertebral de estas ruinas que un día fueron una de las más importantes edificaciones de Venezuela durante el tiempo de la colonia y que sus vestigios nos recuerdan hoy la grandeza que un día vistió al Tocuyo.
Ruins of the Old Temple of Saint Sunday | Antiguo Templo de Santo Domingo
Although there is little information about this place, it is said that it already existed in 1579 and was one of the great temples that surrounded the Mother City of Venezuela.
Aunque existe poca información de este lugar, se dice que ya existía para el año 1579 y fue uno de los grandes templos que rodeaban a la Ciudad Madre de Venezuela.
The place has an incredible architecture, its Greco-Roman style makes it stand out in comparison with the colonial style to which we were very accustomed. A row of columns rises on both sides of the structure, interlaced one with the other by means of arches, highlighting the Ionic and Doric order in them.
El lugar cuenta con una arquitectura increíble, su estilo Grecorromano lo hacen resaltar en comparación con el estilo colonial al que estábamos muy acostumbrados. Una fila de columnas se alza de ambos lados de la estructura enlasados una con la otra por medio de arcos, destacando mucho el orden jónico y dórico en ellas.
Like the Temple of Bethlehem, this one suffered damage after the earthquakes of 1812 and 1950; its roof/front has had to be restored and reinforced with purlins to support what remains of the roof.
Al igual que el Templo de Belén, éste sufrió daños tras los terremotos de 1812 y 1950; su cubierta/frontón ha tenido que ser restaurada y reforzada con cabillas para sostener lo que aún queda de techo.
Rebuilt Churches | Iglesias Reconstruidas
Another point of historical reference and tourist interest in El Tocuyo is to visit the modern churches that have historical antecedents, the church: "Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada Concepción" is one of them, founded even by priests of the Capuchin order in the XVI century.
Otro punto de referencia histórica e interés turístico en El Tocuyo es visitar las iglesias modernas que poseen antecedentes históricos, la iglesia: "Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada Concepción" es una de ellas, fundada incluso por sacerdotes de la orden de los capuchinos en el Siglo XVI.
Due to damage caused by the 1950 earthquake, this temple had to be rebuilt again during the government of General Marcos Pérez Jiménez and was declared a National Historic Monument in 1960.
The present structure of this church has three naves separated by two rows of arches resting on cylindrical columns, with symmetrical architectural lines and neoclassical ornamental elements.
Debido a daños causados por el terremoto de 1950, este templo tuvo que ser reconstruido nuevamente en el gobierno del General Marcos Pérez Jiménez y fue declarado como Monumento Histórico Nacional en el año 1960.
La estructura actual de esta Iglesia es de tres naves separadas por dos hileras de arcadas que reposan sobre columnas cilíndricas, con líneas arquitectónicas simétricas con elementos ornamentales neoclásicos.
Rehabilitated and painted in 2014, it is said that this church is one of the most beautiful in the country and counted as one of the most important for El Tocuyo to be considered "the city of the seven temples".

Undoubtedly, this was a mandatory destination for us in the state of Lara, where we enjoyed walking through its picturesque streets, eating its traditional Acemita Tocuyana (traditional bread) and having the joy of running into a Living Cultural Heritage for Venezuela as are the "Golperos del Tocuyo" (group), where we could sing and chant some songs with them.
Sin duda alguna, este era un destino en el estado Lara obligatorio para nosotros, donde disfrutamos pasear por sus calles pintorescas, comer su tradicional Acemita Tocuyana (pan Tradicional) y tener la dicha de toparnos con un Patrimonio Cultural Viviente para Venezuela como son los "Golperos del Tocuyo" (agrupación), donde pudimos cantar y corear algunas canciones con ellos.
