That there is a Pinmapple community, today we continue walking through the Province of Camaguey and on this occation visiting the Plaza del Carmen and its church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, knowing its history and enjoying its architecture, so follow me on this adventure.
This square of colonial architecture was created in the first decades of the 19th century, through the demolition of houses that were in these surroundings in order to create a space that would enhance the facade of the Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen.
Before it was created, this place was identified as the Pozo de Gracia, a name derived from an extremely fertile well that provided local inhabitants.
The transformation of this space occurred thanks to the initiative of José Nicolás Montejo, councilor of the City Council, who submitted a request to demolish three houses for the creation of this square that not only added decorum but also provided comfort and spaciousness to the Church of Carmen, which at that time was under construction.
This Church stands out as the only one in the city with two imposing towers. Its facade, beautifully symmetrical, fuses baroque elements with the subtle elegance of neoclassical compositions.
This square is very distinguished by its varied popular architecture, with modest facades creating a unique charm, but one of the things I liked the most were the sculptures made by the artist Martha Jiménez, these were carved in marble being a life-size representation, representing the customs of those at that time, among them was the staging of a water seller, a newspaper reader enjoying the quiet square, some gossipy women and a couple of lovers, giving a good hook to visitors like me with their realism when arriving at this beautiful corner.
