A tour to a wine cellar in the Cape.

Our ride was waiting for us and you are going to be amazed. So come and let's go.
062.jpg

I have taken many photos of the white building on the hill from afar and I always thought that it was some rich man's mansion. Then we discovered that it is wine cellars on this famous wine farm and we enquired about a visit to the cellars. We were in luck as tours take place twice a week and without any hesitation, we booked a tour.

The wine estate is called Vergelegen, and it is a very historic farm, as it played a big role in the early days when the settlers arrived.
You can see more of the Vergelegen estate at this safe link;

https://vergelegen.co.za

Our destination was that white building on the hill below the mountain (yellow arrow)

Right we were on our way crossing over the hills on a 3 kilometer trip.

As we got closer to the building the landscapes opened up with some stunning views.
135.JPG

See what I mean about stunning sights?

Even the ocean could be seen.

We arrived at the wine cellars. This is the top floor, and the rest is below under the ground.
174.JPG

The entrance is across this bridge onto the roof of the building.
211.JPG

Below the bridge, a temporary bottling plant was set up for a rush order.

A complete bottle labeling and packing plant.

Then we entered the building and at the reception all kinds of awards and trophies were displayed on the walls.
343.JPG

First floor under the ground.

This section is where the bottles are filled with wine.
305.JPG

308.JPG

And there below was the second floor.
288.JPG

292.JPG

293.JPG

And finally, we were in the basement. The last floor deep in the earth.
The full wine vats are lowered through the sliding door below the tanks above.
319.JPG

An amazing sight met with our eyes. Wine barrels of all types and flavors all over the place.
326.JPG

327.JPG

Each vat has a full history label printed on it. The date that it was filled, the registration number of the vat, the flavor of wine and the age of the barrel.
329.JPG

Here we have Marian with Brent, the tour guide.
335.JPG

Back up to the roof of the building for some last looks.
258.JPG

And then on our way back from this marvel.
131.JPG

I think that I don't need to show you more sights about our way back, as this post is getting a bit long. Save to say that I took a lot of photos and we were mightily impressed with an excellently presented tour.
Wine making is an art and it is a very intricate process, but these guys have perfected the art over many years with great results and that's why their wines are so popular. Now I am not a wine drinker and in fact I don't drink any alcohol, so I cannot tell you anything about sniffing wine or rolling it around the tongue to test the quality, but I think that reputation has much to do with it and this wine estate has a 5 star reputation worldwide.

So the next time, or the first time that you visit the Western Cape in South Africa, don't give this wine estate a miss as you will be warmly welcomed and come away pleasantly surprised.

I hope that you have enjoyed the visit and the story.

And That's All Friends.

Wine farms look much as they did in yesteryear normally, this looks a bit more modern to what I remember, perhaps popularity has brought opportunity to expand. Going on the wine tour through the region tasting your way around was quite a fun thing to do in the 70's !LOLZ

!LUV this part of the Cape still looks...., well farming!
!WINEX for the fridge.

Some of the farms here still operate on the systems from the 50s and it is fun to discover them.
Money talks, as expansion in the modern age cost fortunes.
Always been a farming area and even all of the new developments here now have not changed the area, as farms there will always be !LOLZ

It seems be a great tour! The landscape is amazing ! It reminds me of the vineyards I visited in Mexico.

Thank you and yes, the higher we snaked up that last hill, the more the landscapes started to unfold.
Glad that you also saw some in Mexico and it is always wonderful to visit them.

Oooooh what a lovely day and such lovely photos! I want to do the Fraschhoek wine tram one day! I think you need to spend the night after that. Although waking up in Fransshoek is really not terrible at all ☺️😉

Thank you and yes, we've been to the Franschhoek vineyards and in fact we also toured the area in our little car. Some magnificent old church buildings there built in the old original style and the town is very arty.

Soooooooo pretty! My favorite Vinyard is Haute Cabbrierre!

Yep, really beautiful, fresh, neat and out of this world.
I always try to avoid favorites as then I am never discouraged by unexpected events !LOLZ

that's a really good point actually. Always being open to new experiences. Often, we have an incredibe experience somewhere and we want to repeat it, but that closes a person off from discovering new things, in a way? I do like to support my favourites, but you do make a fair point. I do want to go and visit more boutique wine farms, and not just the big, well known ones. My dream is to own one one day!

Glad that you see it my way as we simply have to keep an open mind at all times. I find that it helps me a lot when I design the charity projects, as I always leave a space open for the unexpected. They say that when you make your plans, then life happens, so it is advised to always be prepared for life.

A farm, oh a farm, we almost had one donated, but unfortunately it was an empty promise. I also want a farm, but it is for a different purpose, as I want to build a skills training college on it. My dream is to offer free and accredited skills training courses on it for community improvement purposes.
We already run a free coding training for poor school children with great success, but so much more can be done if one has the infrastructure. Maybe one day.

My wine farm is a far off dream. I suppose I'd love it to double up as an an animal sanctuary. Then it would tick all my boxes! !luv

Fantastic photos!

I know it's a shit comment but what else can a person say but wow... !

Fantastic photos. Really. They look like professional shots.

Thank you and wow is good enough in my book.

So beautiful!! I really enjoy landscapes full of vineyards, they are so well organized and they show much love and care from the owners.

I like your post a lot, both pictures of the green area, and the wine production in its different steps, looks great.

Thank you and yes, it is very peaceful to be out there. Those farms have been running for generations and one can feel a cloud of witnesses when out on a walk over there.
Glad that you liked the post.
