Perhaps you have had the good fortune to live or travel to the Caribbean, a place where the sun shines more brightly and the blue sea and sky cover us with their brightness and joy.

Today I invite you to visit the small beach of the coastal town of Playa Baracoa, in the municipality of Bauta, Artemisa province in Cuba. A small but beautiful Caribbean beach, around which arose a community of fishermen and merchants that has endured over time. Offering visitors the beauty of its coastline, and also the warmth of its inhabitants.

Families come to these sands to enjoy the sea, especially on weekends and in the summer, as well as visitors from other municipalities and nearby towns. As well as foreigners of different nationalities. Especially young students from the nearby International School of Medicine where future doctors from dozens of countries of the world study. Some of them choose to live in Playa Baracoa while they study.

I come to this beach frequently and I realize that it is not exactly to bathe in its waters, but to collect sea water for nutritional purposes. Although I am also addicted to the beauty of this seascape where I stay absorbed for hours while breathing the pure sea air. On this bridge we had our first personal encounter with @nanixx a Cuban hiver from Havana, who lived some time in this town, and arrived that day as a cyclist with a group of young lovers of the sport of cycling.

Not all of the coast is covered with white sand. Behind the whiteness stretches a rocky landscape of sharp points that we call Teeth of the Dog. This is a strip eroded by the waves, which cover or uncover it as the tide goes out. So when the sea retreats, it leaves behind many treasures that come from its depths such as shells, snails, stars, fish ...

Sometimes I have ventured to walk among these sharp rocks, looking to be closer to the swaying of the waves, the horizon or to discover the small marine life that is trapped when the sea retreats. But what was unexpected for me was to find these fossil footprints among the rocks forming beautiful patterns, textures and arabesques. As a sculptor who prefers marble, finding such traces that time and erosion have left among the rocks was like seeing a natural treasure, and a demonstration that life has been here for hundreds of years.....

But to speak of the beach is not only to speak of its natural beauties. On its grounds lives a community whose subsistence depends mainly on fishing, commerce and tourism. I worked there last year as a Visual Arts Instructor at the Casa de la Cultura Comunitaria. And one of the activities in which we involved the community was this children's costume contest with recycled materials. The creativity of the children, mothers, grandmothers and family members made this day a beautiful show for the community.

With these mojigangas (we call them “muñecones” in Cuba) I start the walk for the inauguration of the summer last summer season. We made these characters in the house of culture in the workshop given by Felix, a Mexican artist who brought us his experience and techniques for community work.

It was a real popular party where community dance and music groups offered their talent as the caravan made its way along the beach area.

The clowns also gave us their joy....

And an improvised stage on the sand allowed the community to enjoy the artistic talent of its children and youth...

So every summer the beach becomes the center of recreation. It is customary that friends and family come to share and enjoy the sea and its beauty. Numerous recreational and artistic activities are scheduled for these months. It is a good season if you would like to visit the beach, the town, and meet its people.

“Por Nuestro Entorno”, is the local community project that takes care of the beach area, and last year assumed together with the Casa de la Cultura Comunitaria, the celebration of the Fiesta del Mar held in March as part of the activities for the world day of the sea.

We made a program for that day, starting with beach cleaning activities. Several groups made up of children, young people, adults and grandparents joined in to collect waste and contribute to the beach cleanup.

For that day I invited two friends to share their knowledge about natural therapies with the community. Because of the marine context, the talks focused on the use of marine resources for health, especially on the use and properties of seawater.

We then continued with the artistic part, enjoying a dance by a children's dance group from the Casa de la Cultura.

In the meantime, we started the relief drawing of a big fish in the sand. Children and mothers joined in this fun activity, led by my fellow instructor Maria and me. Although the sun was already intense at that time, we left a nice souvenir on the sand.

Looking from the shore towards the town you can see the houses that are fortunate enough to have a view of the sea. Among them there are also stores, schools, warehouses, etc. Something important for travelers is to know that several of these houses offer lodging services. Some rent the whole house, others small apartments and some only rooms. Prices generally range between 15 and 30 dollars per day.

On the first street in front of these houses there is a wide variety of cafeterias where you can get pizzas, sandwiches, drinks, beers, traditional Cuban food, coffee and even the delicious sugar cane juice that we call guarapo.

As you can see, the beauty of this natural environment is linked to the joy of a community that keeps the beach well cared for and enjoys its traditions. When you come here, remember to bring your luggage, but also the best of your smiles.

Tal vez has tenido la fortuna de vivir o viajar hasta el Caribe, un lugar donde el Sol brilla con más intensidad y el azul del mar y el cielo nos cubren con su brillo y su alegría.

Hoy te invito a conocer la playita del poblado costero de Playa Baracoa, en el municipio Bauta, provincia Artemisa en Cuba. Una pequeña pero hermosa playa caribeña, alrededor de la cual surgió una comunidad de pescadores y comerciantes que ha perdurado en el tiempo. Ofreciendo al visitante la belleza de su costa, y también la calidez de sus habitantes.

A estas arenas vienen las familias a disfrutar del mar, especialmente durante los fines de semana y en el verano.También llegan visitantes de otros municipios y poblados cercanos. Así como también extranjeros de diferentes nacionalidades. Sobre todo jóvenes estudiantes de la cercana Escuela Internacional de Medicina donde estudian futuros médicos de decenas de países del mundo. Algunos de los cuales eligen vivir en Playa baracoa mientras estudian.

A esta Playa vengo con frecuencia y me doy cuenta que no precisamente para bañarme en sus aguas, sino para recolectar agua de mar con fines nutricionales. Aunque también soy un adicto a la belleza de este paisaje marino en la que me quedo absorto por horas mientras respiro el puro aire marino. En este puente tuvimos nuestro primer encuentro personal con @nanixx una hiver cubana de la Habana, que vivió algún tiempo en este poblado,y llegó ese día como ciclista junto a un grupo de jóvenes amantes del deporte de los ciclos.

No toda la costa está cubierta de la blanca arena. Después de la blancura se extiende un paisaje rocoso de afiladas puntas que nosotros llamamos Diente de Perro. Esta es una franja erosionada por las olas, que la cubren o descubren según baja la marea. Así cuando se retira el mar, deja tras de si muchos tesoros que vienen de sus profundidades como conchas, caracoles, estrellas, peces ..

A veces me he aventurado a caminar entre esas rocas filosas, buscando estar más cerca del vaivén de las olas, del horizonte o para descubrir la pequeña vida marina que queda atrapada cuando el mar se retira. Pero lo que me resultó inesperado fue encontrar estas huellas de fósiles entre las rocas formando bellos dibujos, texturas y arabescos. Como escultor que prefiere el mármol, encontrar semejantes huellas que el tiempo y la erosión han dejado entre las rocas fue como ver un tesoro natural, y una demostración de que la vida ha estado aquí por cientos de años....

Pero hablar de la playita, no es hablar solo de sus bellezas naturales. En sus predios vive una comunidad cuya subsistencia depende fundamentalmente de la pesca, el comercio y el turismo. Allí trabaje el año anterior como Instructor de Artes Visuales en la Casa de la Cultura Comunitaria. Y una de las actividades en las que involucramos a la comunidad fue este concurso infantil de disfraces con materiales reciclados. La creatividad de los niños, madres, abuelas y familiares hicieron de este día un lindo espectáculo para la comunidad.

Con estas mojigangas ( muñecones les decimos en Cuba) inicio el paseo por la inauguración del verano la pasada temporada veraniega. Estos personajes los realizamos en la casa de la cultura dentro del taller impartido por Felix, un artista mexicano que nos trajo su experiencia y técnicas para el trabajo comunitario.

Fue una verdadera fiesta popular donde los grupos de danza y música comunitarios ofrecieron su talento mientras la caravana recorria su trayectoria por el área de la playa.

También nos dieron su alegría los payasos..

Las familias asistieron a la fiesta...

Hasta la Abuela " Verano" estuvo en el paseo...

Después hubieron actividades deportivas durante el día...

Y un improvisado escenario sobre la arena permitió que la comunidad disfrutará del talento artístico de sus niños y jóvenes...

Así cada verano la playa se convierte en el núcleo de la recreación. Es costumbre que los amigos y la familia vengan a compartir y disfrutar del mar y su belleza. Para estos meses se programan numerosas actividades recreativas y artísticas. Es una buena temporada si quisieras visitar la playa, el poblado, y conocer su gente.

"Por Nuestro Entorno", es el proyecto local comunitario que se encarga del cuidado de la zona de la playa, y el año pasado asumió junto con la Casa de la Cultura Comunitaria, la celebración de la Fiesta del Mar realizada en Marzo como parte de las actividades por el día mundial del mar.

Hicimos un programa para ese día, comenzando con actividades de limpieza de la playa. Varios colectivos integrados por niños, jóvenes, adultos y abuelos se integraron para recoger desechos y aportar a la limpieza de la playa.

Para ese día invite a dos amigos a compartir sus conocimientos sobre terapias naturales con la comunidad. Por el contexto marino las charlas giraron sobre el uso de los recursos marinos para la salud, especialmente sobre el uso y propiedades del agua de mar.

Seguimos entonces con la parte artística, disfrutando de una danza de un grupo danzario infantil de la Casa de la Cultura.

Mientras tanto, empezamos el dibujo a relieve de un gran pez en la arena. Niños y madres se sumaron en esta divertida actividad, dirigida por mi colega instructora María y yo. A pesar de que el Sol ya se hacía intenso a esa hora dejamos un lindo recuerdo sobre la arena.

Mirando desde la orilla hacia el pueblo se observan las casas que tienen la fortuna de tener vista al mar. Entre ellas también existen tiendas, escuelas, bodegas, etc. Algo importante para los viajeros es saber que varias de estas casas ofrecen servicio de hospedaje. Algunos alquilan toda la casa, otros pequeños apartamentos y algunos solo habitaciones. Los precios generalmente oscilan entre 15 y 30 dólares por día.

En la primera calle frente a estas casas existen una amplia variedad de cafeterías donde puedes conseguir pizzas, sándwich, bebidas, cervezas, comida tradicional cubana, café e incluso el rico jugo de caña que nosotros llamamos guarapo.

Como ves la belleza de este entorno natural esta ligada a la alegría de una comunidad que mantiene la playa cuidada y le gusta disfrutar de sus tradiciones. Cuando vengas por aquí, recuerda traer tu equipaje, pero también la mejor de tus sonrisas.
