A tour of Northern Spain: Bilbao (ENG - ESP)

For a long time I have been curious to know the cities of Northern Spain and what better time than in this April vacations on the occasion of my birthday. I love to travel and the same day of my birthday on April 22 I took a bus to go to one of the first cities of this adventure and it has been to Bilbao.

I can tell you beforehand that Bilbao is a city with a lot of vibe and a unique energy, it is also full of corners waiting for us to discover. It seems to me to be a tourist destination little mentioned, which will allow us to know the Basque traditions and the history of its streets and facades in a very authentic way.

Bilbao, for many years was considered one of the most industrialized and mining cities in Spain (hence the saying that it is a gray city) but today, this city has evolved and is one of the most sustainable and cleanest cities in the country and it is noticeable from the moment you arrive and walk through it completely. The city is surrounded by a lot of green and just a few steps away you find its spectacular sea. This makes it perfect to visit in any month of the year, as it can satisfy lovers of nature, sea, gastronomy, music and culture. Next, I will show you and narrate my experience touring this charming city.

We decided to start getting to know the city by seeing it from one of its highest points and it is none other than the Artxanda Viewpoint, from here we have a panoramic view of the entire city and its surroundings. We went up in a fun and practical Artxanda Funicular, it has departures every 15 minutes both there and back, for an affordable cost of 2.50 €, I assure you that you will have 3 minutes of travel with unique views of Bilbao, so get your camera ready and capture these moments.

Once at the top we find a viewpoint where we can admire all the points of the city and identify all those important buildings of the city to then guide us in our tours, in addition, there are also several trails and lots of vegetation, it is a short but very pleasant route, you can take the opportunity to eat some pintxos in one of the restaurants that are there, have a picnic or just relax sitting on one of the benches and recharge your batteries.

After this tour we went down to the old town, we started in the New Square surrounded by a lot of architecture, arches and columns that make it wonderful. This area is full of restaurants, stores of all kinds and pintxo bars so taking advantage of the midday hour was the perfect excuse to try some gastronomy.

Further on we have arrived at the Bilbao Cathedral, this is hidden in a small square called Santiago and although it does not have a large space to display its splendor and it is a little complicated to have wide angles to photograph it, it is very impressive to observe its architecture and enjoy this building.

I was told that to have a Basque experience in the best style of the city is to try one pintxos in each bar, so we ventured out and went through three locals and we could say that all were spectacular. We also visited the Riverside Market I always like to visit the local markets of each city I visit and delight myself with the variety of fruits, meats and fresh fish and local products that each destination has for us, I think it is an interesting way to live and know each city.

After lunch and recharge it was time to meet one of the protagonists of this city and it is none other than the Guggenheim Museum is a unique building and considered one of the most important architectures in the world. I recommend seeing it both day and night and you will see that the building looks totally different. When we walk along the sides of the river we see that this building is shaped like a boat, it is also covered with titanium panels and with the reflection of the sun look like fish scales, I tell you that it is very curious to see it from various angles of view.

On the back of the museum we will find Puppy, it is a huge sculpture in the shape of a dog with flowers of all colors and this is undoubtedly the most beloved mascot of all Bilbao. Also at this same point we find a huge bronze Gigantic Spider that seeks the attention of all visitors who go to the museum and certainly is a mandatory photo for those who pass through here.

As an important fact near the museum, we can see the tower of Iberdrola, here is a tourist viewpoint in which we can see panoramic views of the entire city.

Of course we could not miss the **San Mames Stadium, this is if anything the greatest pride of this city, here you can make internal tours of the soccer fields or simply admire its beauty from the outside.

And without leaving behind another of the protagonists of Bilbao is the ria, which crosses the city, which starts from La pena and ends in the Cantabrian Sea, are about 14 kilometers, which we can pass from one side to another through different bridges distributed throughout the city, looking to cross them we get with many curiosities of the city that certainly will not regret at any time to know, so I encourage you and plan an adventure to beautiful city.

Although due to time factors it was not possible to experience and beyond tourism, Bilbao has an impressive cultural offer, this city concentrates many activities related to film, music and art in general, plus great bookstores, libraries and art galleries that encourage great authors and street artists and not to mention its gastronomic culture as Bilbao boasts many restaurants with Michelin stars and Repsol Suns that I promise to return to discover this type of offerings in general. Here I show you some pintxos that I have eaten in some of its bars.

Desde hace mucho tiempo he tenido la curiosidad de conocer las Ciudades de Norte de España y que mejor momento que en estas vacaciones de Abril con motivo de mi cumpleaños. Me encanta viajar y el mismo día de mi cumpleaños el 22 de abril me tome un autobús para ir a una de las primeras ciudades de esta aventura y ha sido a Bilbao.

Les puedo decir de ante mano que Bilbao es una Ciudad con mucha vibra y una energía única, además está repleta de rincones esperándonos por descubrir. Me parece ser un destino turístico poco mencionado, lo que nos permitirá conocer las tradiciones vascas y la historia de sus calles y fachadas de una forma muy auténtica.

Bilbao, Por muchos años fue considerada una de las ciudades más industrializadas y mineras de España (de allí viene su dicho de que es una ciudad gris) pero hoy en día, esta ciudad ha sabido evolucionar y es una de las ciudades más sostenibles y limpias del país y es que se nota desde el momento en que llegas y la recorres por completo. La ciudad esta rodeada de mucho verde y a muy pocos pasos te encuentras con su mar espectacular. Esto hace que sea perfecta visitarla en cualquier mes del año, ya que puede satisfacer a los amantes de la naturaleza, del mar, la gastronomía, música y cultura. A continuación, te mostrare y narrare mi experiencia recorriendo esta encantadora ciudad.

Decidimos empezar a conocer la ciudad viéndola desde uno de sus puntos más altos y no es más que el Mirador de Artxanda, desde acá tenemos una vista panorámica de toda la ciudad y sus alrededores. Subimos en un divertido y practico Funicular Artxanda. Como dato tiene salida cada 15 minutos tanto de ida y vuelta, por un accesible costo de 2,50 €, te aseguro que tendrás 3 minutos de recorrido con unas vistas únicas de Bilbao, así que prepara tu cámara y capta estos momentos.

Una vez arriba nos encontramos con un mirador donde podremos admirar todos los puntos de la ciudad e identificar todos esos edificios importantes de la ciudad para luego guiarnos en nuestros recorridos, además, también existen varios recorridos de senderos y mucha vegetación, es una ruta corta pero muy agradable, pueden aprovechar para comer algún pintxos en uno de los restaurantes que allí se encuentran, hacer un picnic o simplemente relajarse sentados en uno de sus bancos y recargar energías

Luego de este recorrido bajamos al casco histórico, comenzamos por la Plaza Nueva rodeada de mucha arquitectura, arcos y columnas que la hacen maravillosa. Esta zona esta repleta de restaurantes, comercios de todo tipo y bares de pintxos así que aprovechando la hora de medio día era la excusa perfecta para probar un poco la gastronomía.

Mas adelante hemos llegado a la Catedral de Bilbao, esta se encuentra escondida en una pequeña Plazuela llamada Santiago y aunque no tiene un gran espacio para exhibir su esplendor y es un poco complicado tener ángulos amplios para fotografiarla es muy impresiónate observar su arquitectura y disfrutar de esta edificación.

Me comentaron que para tener una experiencia vasca al mejor estilo de la ciudad es probar uno pintxos en cada bar, así que nos aventuramos y pasamos por tres locales y podríamos decir que todos estaban espectaculares. También visitamos el Mercado de la Ribera que siempre me gusta visitar los mercados locales de cada ciudad que visito y deleitarme con la variedad de frutas, carnes y pescados frescos y productos locales que cada destino tiene para nosotros, me parece es una forma interesante de vivir y conocer cada ciudad.

Ya luego de comer y recargar energías era el momento de conocer a uno de los protagonistas de esta ciudad y no es más que el Museo Guggenheim es una edificación única y considerada una de las arquitecturas más importantes del mundo. Recomiendo verla tanto de día como de noche y verán que el edifico se ve totalmente diferente. Cuando vamos caminando por los lados del rio vemos que este edificio tiene forma de un barco, además está cubierto con paneles de titanio y con el reflejo del sol parecen escamas de pescados, les digo que es muy curioso verlo desde varios ángulos de vista.

Sobre la parte de atrás del museo nos encontraremos con Puppy, es una escultura enorme en forma de perro con flores de todos colores y este es sin duda la mascota más querida de todo Bilbao. También en este mismo punto nos encontramos con una enorme Araña Gigantesca de bronce que busca la atención de todos los visitantes que van al museo y sin duda es foto obligatoria para los que pasamos por aquí.

Como dato importante cerca del museo, podemos ver la Torre de Iberdrola, acá se encuentra un Mirador Turístico en la cual podemos ver unas vistas panorámicas de toda la ciudad.

Desde luego no se nos podía escapar el Estadio de San Mamés este es si más el mayor orgullo de esta ciudad, acá pueden realizar recorridos internos por los campos de futbol o simplemente admirar su belleza desde afuera.

Y sin dejar atrás otros de los protagonistas de Bilbao es La Ria, que atraviesa la ciudad, la cual empieza desde La pena y finaliza en el cantábrico, son unos 14 kilómetros, la cual podemos pasar de un lado a otro a través de diferentes puentes distribuidos por toda la ciudad, buscando atravesarlos nos conseguimos con muchas curiosidades de la ciudad que sin duda no se arrepentirán en ningún momento de conocer, así que les ánimo y planifiquen una aventura hasta hermosa ciudad.

Aunque por factores de tiempo no fue posible experimentar y más allá del turismo, Bilbao tiene una oferta cultural impresionante, en esta ciudad se concentra muchas actividades relacionadas con el cine, música y el arte en general, además de grandes librerías, bibliotecas y galerías de arte que incentivan a grandes autores reconocidos y artistas callejeros y sin contar con su cultura gastronómica ya que Bilbao presume de muchos restaurantes con estrellas Michelin y Soles Repsol que prometo volver para descubrir este tipo de ofertas en general. Hay varias cosas que quería comentarte pero ¡Stop! O sea, estoy babeando con las fotos de la fachada del mercado de la ribera, ¡te quedaron preciosas!, están pa’ ponerlas en un cuadro! Yo he estado ahí en frente varías veces y me ha parecido complicado sacarlo bonito. Me enamoré de esa foto y de las tres que están inmediatamente después, bellas, cuadros fijo.

Dicho esto 🤣 cuanta nostalgia me invade leyéndote, suena a tontería pero yo intento ir cada año al festival BBK y este me lo voy a tener que perder 😭 con sus pinchos incluidos.

Está muy completo tu recorrido para haber sido tan solo l primera visita, sin duda sabes sacarle provecho a un viajecito jajajaja. Fíjate que yo nunca he visto la catedral xD o no me he dado cuenta jajaja tampoco es que La Haya buscado pero me quedé viendo l foto sin tener idea de como ubicarla.

Mi lugar favorito es la plaza nueva sin duda, ahí me meto y no paro de comer. Pero ninguna visita a Bilbao está completa sin pasar a contemplar un rato San Mamés y el Guggenheim, son construcciones espectaculares.

Qué bonito leer un viaje con fotos tan geniales, haces que quiera volver allí y recorrer esas calles nuevamente. ¡Sigue viajando así, que da mucho gusto! Jajajaja.
