When the body loses more fluid than it absorbs, dehydration develops. It can be brought on by a number of things, such as physical exercise, heat exposure, illness, or simply not drinking enough water. Fluid loss can also be accelerated by some drugs, excessive alcohol consumption, or caffeine use.
