Within all of Medellin, the National Palace is one of the most curious places I had the opportunity to visit. The reason? Although it is a building that is almost 100 years old and was declared a historical monument of the city, its facilities were used to create a brilliant mix of a modern shopping center and an old art gallery.
It is a curious contrast that is felt from the moment we set foot in the place, with three levels dedicated to selling clothes and food of all kinds and vendors willing to convince you to go into their store, almost as if it were a fair for tourists.
However, this creates a unique contrast with the architecture of the place, full of imposing details and huge lamps that transport us very easily to the previous century.
My favorite part, without a doubt, was the art gallery that occupies the last three levels of the building, full of sculptures and paintings of classical and modern art, where it is easy to see references to current popular culture along with other old pieces.
I feel that Medellin is a city that has achieved a very good balance between modernization and respect for its traditions and cultural history, without one necessarily having to take care of the other, both visions coexist harmoniously and give the tourist experience a unique flavor that is difficult to find anywhere else in Latin America, things do not feel divided and segmented but organic.
The National Palace is located in the heart of the city, and according to what I researched it has been used as a commercial center since the 90s, although it was originally conceived as a result of the need to have public, political and educational facilities.
As I have mentioned in previous posts, I really enjoyed walking through the center of Medellin and along with other places such as the Palace of Culture, Botero Plaza or the Old Railway, it is a perfect complement to a tour within the city, especially when we work on a limited budget. And of course, there are plenty of wonderful photo spots inside, as well as a very intimate rooftop bar/café to spend some time relaxing.
Do I recommend it? Of course, although there is not much to do beyond seeing and buying things, the picturesque nature of the place makes it worth a chance. And, in a way, it allows us to connect with a unique part of Colombian history.
