On Bruny we always stop to visit some friends who had moved from the mainland some years ago to retire with an ocean view. It's a stunning place overlooking the channel between the island and the Tasmania 'mainland' - I didn't take photos of the property as we were too busy chatting. He has a huge shed and a ton of vintage cars, and a huge vegetable and fruit garden where we gorged on silvanberries and peaches. Tassie in the summer is really about abundance.
Jamie met Lachie through a Land Rover Facebook group and that's how we ended up friends. The two have a lot in common, from bird spotting to cars. His latest acquisition is Mark 9 Jaguar which is pretty much untouched. The seats are still stuffed with horsehair and there were some lovely details such as fold down tables in the back seat.
Lachie and Trish decided to take us for a drive for lunch and luckily this was in the Jaguar. You can't beat an ocean road in a vintage car that's for sure!!
They took us to Bruny Cafe on the north side of the island at Dennes Point. It's one of those places with variable opening hours and that have specials on weekend like wood fired pizza or a Thai night. It was very posh with beautiful ocean views and must be gorgeous in the winter with the wood fire going.
To be honest we wouldn't have spent the money on eating out as it was kinda expensive and the only choice for us was calamari which was $25. Between that and a glass of wine for me and a cider for Jamie and two chocolate top ice creams it was around $80 which could have bought us food for a week. But sometimes it's rude to turn down a lunch offer and we were reluctant to say we were on a budget. Still it was a nice lunch.
We then went back to Lachlans and chatted for ages. When you live on a small island with hardly any visitors it must be so nice to have people drop in. He did try to see us a couple of vintage Land Rovers but they weren't quite right for us.
From there we went to Get Shucked for oysters. It's a popular tourist spot so even by 12 it was hella busy so we drove past the take away window and then found a little beach spot to enjoy them with Tabasco and lemon.
I used to absolutely hate oysters but I kept trying them because everyone has raved about them over the years. They say you just gotta get used to any taste and eventually I got it. They taste of the sea and are absolutely delicious.
Whilst arguably expensive at $29 for 12, it really is an experience and with a beautiful view we felt like the richest people in the world.
After that it was back to our special beach camp in the north island before heading over to the Tasman peninsula. Perfecto.
With Love,
I honestlty recommend a day trip at least to Bruny if you are visiting Tassie. It's a very special place. If you are lucky you might even see the famous albino wallaby.

It is not the final destination that is important, but the journey to it, and the experiences and memories we create along the way. The smallest things bring the greatest joy. Thank you for sharing these moments with us here. ☺️💗🙏
