The ferry to Spain was intended to be a huge short cut, removing over 1000 kilometres of driving for our 50 year old car as well as sanity and wear and tear. With a cabin, it cost about 1000 AUD - a lot, but again similar to what we would pay for an equivalent journey from mainland Australia to Tasmania, and the ferry would also save us about that much in petrol as well.
The ferry itself was huge - it's actually a cruise ship. I did appreciate how there wasn't a mad fight for the best seats. It might be in summer but at this time of year it seemed full of retirees. That might be different at Easter when school is out.
We beelined for somewhere nice and quiet to sit. Hot tip for travel? BYO teabags and powdered oat milk. I'm actually impressed with this brand. It works out at 1.76 p a litre but you only need a tsp in hot water for a good taste. I'm going to carry a snap lock bag in my handbag from now on... Tea and coffee out is EXPENSIVE.
We could, of course, have eaten on the ship. There's a few bars and dining areas. The most expensive was £41 for dinner... No thanks! However you could get a decent hot roast, fish and chips or veggie meal for £13 or various snacks.
However, we bought our own food thats we had bought for half the price from Tesco the day before. I'd also packed rolls, almonds, dates, crisps, peanut butter and even some Penguin biscuits, so for afters we invented 'ferry tarts' which were oat crackers with peanut butter topped with dates. They were bloody delicious.
Most of the evening I listened to a BBC podcast on the Cardiff 5, a miscarriage of justice and crime story about five black men wrongly accused of the murder of a prostitute. It was riveting and I enjoyed listening to it staring out to sea as the sun went down.
The cabin was tiny of course but simple. I bagged the bottom bunk. There was also a small ensuite. I didn't sleep too well as my nervous system isn't keen on the swaying of the ship whilst I'm trying to sleep.
In the morning Jamie had his first ferry buy - a coffee - but we had brought our own pain de chocolat and I had my hot water to make my own cheapskate tea. Jamie even found a microwave to heat up his pastry. I also found a heap of mayonnaise sachets that I liberated for the journey.
Then, Spain came into view... And we were off onto the continent...

Ah enjoy Spain @riverflows, you certainly are having a whale of a trip! I had a chuckle about your comment about all the seniors on the ferry.
An anecdote I'd like to share with you is the day the realization hit hubby and I that we indeed were part of that brigade the first time we parked in the pensioners bay. We felt like naughty kids, had a good chuckle as I was checking around to see if anyone saw us.
It was quite a wake-up call.
Good tips to save the pennies and pounds, I was told to take a small bottle with to fill up at the water fountains when flying via Dubai as even a bottle of water costs a lot there.
Have fun!
Hahaha yes well I saw an older couple on the ferry to Morocco necking whiskey out of a juice bottle - they were certainly not "typical" pensioners 🤣🤣🤣 You are only as old as you feel and I bet the young Spanish group we met on ferry to Morrocco thought WE were old!!!
Haha, well if they did think that, I'm sure you showed them that 'oldies' can still have fun, and be naughty like the whiskey-juice couple:)
They say, the older you get, the older, 'old' becomes.
The big 8... suddenly does not seem as old as it did 2 decades ago, never thought I would say that!
Well I am glad you are in good health and congrats for making it this far xz
Almost as expensive as on the plane. It's definitely better to bring your own food, the only thing I'd probably buy on the ferry is coffee 😂 how long did the ferry trip last?
Haha yes it's hard to make coffee on the ferry. It was 20 hours.
Wow, 20 hours! 😂 this is definitely tough. Back in high school, we spent 24 hours on a ship for a trip, without a cabin. We slept outside, and I'm still not sure how I survived that experience 😂Enjoy! 😊

What an adventure! I've only ridden a ferry once, up in NY state. But to overnight on one, how cool!
Arghhh could I be any more jealous of you guys? xD Kidding. Enjoy Spain. Hoping it greets you with loads of sun and nice people <3
And hell yeah for eating from Tesco's. Screw overpriced travel food.
It got soooo wet in Spain!!! Loving it so far .. we are in morocco already!!
I loved this post! I believe that must be such an experience to travel by ferry.
The pictures are exquisite and the food look very yummy!!
How long did that take going down Spain? 3 days? The Bay of Biscay can be quite rough, i got quite seasick once 🤮
I took seasick tabs on advice of sister in law, it actually was fine. Took us four days, we are in Morocco already!!
Wow, one of my dream destination is the Spain. I wonder how beautiful there, how's their food and the hospitality of the people around there✨
