Swim The Blues: Binalong Bay, Bay of Fires Camp

in Worldmappin15 hours ago

After Mayfield Beach we drove up to Bicheno for laundry and a massage for me, and then the extra hour to get up to the Bay of Fires conservation area, a haven for walkers, mountain bikers and fisherman. The distinctive orange rocks make it a memorable place - you might recall my photos of this place a couple of times over the years!

However it was less bright and sunny this time, and being summer, many of the good camp spots overlooking the ocean were taken by people in big rigs there for weeks on end. As we didn't get in til around 4, we drove around for a while to find a good spot. Still, we are fussy, and even mid summer you can get a park mid week. We settled for a place away from the ocean views, but in many ways it was better - less wind, quieter, and with views of the scrub where black cockatoos cawed and gnawed on banksia.

Honestly they are beautiful birds and I wish I could have taken a photo. In the morning about twenty came down and it was waaay better than television. They really are one of my fave birds.

As I couldn't take a photo, pleAse watch this short YouTube.

From there we went to Binalong Bay a few kilometers south for a swim. It's pretty rough on the campground side but at Binalong it's pretty protected. The white sands certainly make for some really clear blue water!!

Though it was overcast, it was still stunning. Even Jamie is coming in the water without a wetty now. It's been my dream to swim with him so I'm stoked he is making the effort. The water is a little warmer up on the East coast so if you're around in summer do be brave and jump in..

Binalong Bay is actually quite nice to walk around and maybe pop into a cafe for something to eat - last time we were here we had wood fired pizza. There's some really nice houses facing the water and lots of boats going to and fro for fisherman.

However we were off to the Ben Lomond National Park and a really crazy road, so my gills were about to dry out for a bit.

With Love,
