As soon as I entered the Silay Public Plaza, I immediately noticed the cleanliness and orderliness of the surroundings. With the number of trees surrounding it, it looked like a paradise in the middle of the city. The shade of the trees provides a natural coolness that invites people to linger in the area. You won't feel the rush or noise of the city—a rare occurrence in many public spaces. The silence of the square seems like an invitation to meditate. As I sat in one of the seats, I felt like I had a world of my own. No fuss, no pressure—a chance to reflect on life and the things that make me happy.
On the side of the park, a row of street food shops can be found. For me, it's these foods that give public spaces their unique character. From hot kwek-kwek, tusok-tusok, to sweet banana cue, every food seems to come with a memory that brings joy. One of the things I will never forget is when I fed a little street dog that was there in the square. His eyes were full of gratitude as he waited for the food I gave him. I couldn't help but be emotional—a simple moment filled with love and care.

When it gets dark, Silay Public Plaza comes alive with their colorful fountain show. The lights dancing to the rhythm of the music seem to bring magic to the whole place. I couldn't take my eyes off watching the colors that seemed to be playing in the water. The music provides accompanying vibes that add to the specialness of the experience. The entertainment caused by the plaza's fountain show is also priceless. At night, the colorful lights accompanied by music seem like a performance offered to all who pass by. It's not just a pastime; it's a reminder that happiness is found in the little things. In front of the fountain, all ages seem to become young again, while admiring the beauty of light and sound.
History Around Every Corner
Silay City is not just about its plaza; it is also a city steeped in history. With more than 200 years of history, Silay has been the center of culture and art in Negros Occidental. Therefore, it is known as the “Paris of Negros”. This nickname is not only because of the beauty of the place, but also because of its large collection of European-inspired heritage houses. These houses, more than 30 of which have been declared historical landmarks, reflect the wealth of the city during the era of the Sugar Barons—a time when Negros Occidental was the largest sugar producer in the world. Another beauty of the plaza is the view of the San Diego Pro-Cathedral, the only pro-cathedral outside Metro Manila. The church, with a dome resembling St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, was designed in 1920 by Italian architect Antonio Bernasconi. The presence of this pro-cathedral near the plaza adds formality and elegance to the place.
ACTIVE LIVING IN THE PLAZA
Silay Public Plaza is not only a place of rest and history; it is also a hub for health and active living. At the initiative of the government, they launched the "bike-all-you-can" program, where the public can use the stationary bikes placed in the plaza for free. This program aims to promote a healthy lifestyle, especially for those who suffer from diabetes or have a sedentary lifestyle. During my visit, I tried the bikes and noticed how fun and useful they are. This is a thoughtful project that shows the city's concern for its citizens.

VINTAGE CHARM OF SILAY
Aside from the plaza, one of the things that impressed me was the vintage charm of the entire Silay City. As I was traveling from Bacolod-Silay Airport to my aunt's house, I couldn't help but notice the structures and buildings in the city. Even fast food chains like Jollibee and McDonald's have vintage-inspired architecture! As someone who loves vintage, this experience was great for me. The houses and dining areas seem like pieces of the past brought to life in the present. It's a visual feast that anyone with an appreciation of the old days will surely enjoy.
Silay: Paris of Negros
The question is, why is Silay called the "Paris of Negros"? The answer lies in the city's rich history and culture. With more than 30 heritage houses that have been declared historical landmarks, you can see the European influence in the architecture of the houses and buildings here. Cultural shows, art events, and preservation of history brought this nickname to Silay.
