Getting out and about

in Worldmappin4 years ago (edited)

Ok Its official, I need some Fresh Air, and Photography Practice. Gotta get out of the house, If I spend 5 more minutes at this laptop its going out the window.

My eyes have gone square. Seriously, Hold your horses I'll Be Right Back.

Road Trip!

There that's better, its sunny outside and the boy has been on Easter vacation for the better part of 2 weeks.

We have in that 2 weeks surprisingly done... Not a lot. Ok that's not exactly true, we have done a lot of Minecraft, Lego, Movies, general slobbery.

You know, Normal Rainy days activities, which seem to bleed into every day during covid times.

So out we went. About 45 minutes from our place is an area called the Les Baronnies de Pyrenees, and there stood our destination. The Chateau de Mauvezin.

So After me and @iaura set out. (Who I managed to successfully onboard, after a week of pestering the other Night. I got her to make a HIVE account too!) I use google maps to take the scenic route so I could get a few shots on the way.

All Photos are taken on our Phones, Honor 9 and 10 respectively. No clue what the cameras are but they make phone calls.

Thats the destination there, Cant believe we spent so much time 'discussing' the road I forgot to take more pictures en route...

She wasn't impressed with me, Apparently Twingo's are not offroad vehicles. BUT Google said it was a Road.

Once we got there we had a nice walk around, Its pretty much deserted so nice and quiet.

While walking around the side we found our first highlight for the day. Pyrenean Goats complete with a traditional Gascon shelter.

These were my sons favorite bit, Medieval toilets. He kept standing under them shouting Oh no, someones gonna poo on me!
I guess its better the place was empty...

Fun fact- Medieval toilets are called the privy or garderobe I have been told, and neccessarium. Another fun fact, Every time I go to the bathroom now I will be referring to it as the neccessarium.

The Castle itself has been being Renovated for a long while, Its looking pretty good.

They have even built replicas of the outbuildings and palisades which is pretty cool.

And now a word from our sponsor - Medieval Mail Authentic chainmail made by Serfs for Serfs. Utilizing Recycled Components Reclaimed from dead... erm.. decommissioned knights.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming.

A Brief History-(doing my best here I am NOT a Historian)

Originally built in the 11th century as a wooden tower on a artificial earth embankment,Surrounded by palisades. These kind of structures are called casterar in Gascon.

Then for a few hundred years this area bounced round between so many lords that I imagine the poor bastards living here didn't know who owned their serfdom.

In 1360, the chateau de Mauvezin was returned to the King of England. The Duke of Anjou the son of the King of France, and the lieutenant-general in Languedoc, was more than a bit cross about that.

So he besieged the English in Mauvezin, took over the castle and gave it to Jean the 1st d'Armagnac.

Now its the turn of Gaston Febus to be pissed off about it,He wanted that prime real estate. So Off he goes to war against his neighbor.

After a few more years of knightly ass kicking, In 1379, it was given to Gaston Febus who added it to his country of Nébouzan.

Now Gaston Febus is an almost legendary figure here in the Baronnies, theres even a big festival every year in his honor.

He commissioned a number of Fortifications in the area designed by the Languedoc architect Sicard de Lordat.

So Lordat oversaw the beginnings of the construction of this big ass Chateau you see here.

It was added to over the centuries and stayed in the same family for the most part until the Revolution, when it became State owned after lots of guillotining and chop, chop, chopping of heads.

It is currently part of a large restoration project as it was in pretty bad shape at the turn of the century.

During the summer you can pay to go on a tour of the interior. Can also check it out inside on Google maps.

Originally i thought that pointy structure was the neccessarium! Boy, i love that word, it's so grand!

Brilliant facts, it sounds like Game of Thrones . The goats look like they are posing haha 🐐

they are posing, they know they are sexy beasts

This place looks amazing and can't wait to travel again. I love historical buildings and exploring new regions so guess I will have to make do with you lucky lot posting about your travels for now.

Comedy is my probably my favorite content. It's a toss-up though cuz I can't sit still, Pura and I are digital nomads. Comedy/travel.. something like that. But in both those topics I appreciate lessons and history.. make it funny or make it exciting.

Completely fuckin lost me at the end there when you mentioned Google maps and, rather than talk a buncha shit about it, I'll say nice job onboarding @iaura and thanks for identifying your camera.

Location, tools used, things like maps with arrows n whatever else on them are esthetically appealing and people like me call "bullshit" when authors share photography but don't identify the camera.

Vetty nice, Grasshoppuh!

Notes taken! As always the advice is appreciated. I have a ways to go yet to get my posts the way I want them but I'll keep working on it. I use the google maps thing in the car to find out how to get places sometimes as this place is covered in small roads, can find some real hidden treasures just by taking unused routes. In the future I will use an actual Image of a Map to help pinpoint locations.

For sure google maps in the car. Not sure how I got anywhere before Rose, that's what I call the navigation voice in the speakers, "Rose." She can be a real dick sometimes but the majority of time I couldn't get there without her.

Frikkin car does everything, even drives and parks itself, it's crazy. Why in the real fuck it can't automatically turn on the seat heaters every time it says "roads my be icy" which is every.single.day the past four weeks is beyond me!

And I can't believe they'll just run like that for an hour and a half without anyone in it—crazy. Was in the gym that long, apparently I didn't push the button. First time I ever did that. Good car just stayed there like a parked vehicle idling for me. I didn't have to warm it up or anything when I got back, good to go!

That was the first time the radio was on when I got inside, it doesn't turn itself in until the car's running. Couldn't figure out why that thing was on when the door opened itself for me.

Me and Google have a love hate relationship, I think I have managed to successfully destroy the google assistant on my phone. I think she's suffering from a serious psychological disorder of some description these days.

I'm probably too old fashioned on vehicles Last time a car door opened on its own for me I wanted to call an exorcist, just don't seem natural.

Google maps though, now that shits a winner, It works on foot, on a bike, in a car, train etc. I have actually stopped on Train journeys to get off halfway to a destination cause the google maps says there's a Roman ruin, Something cool like the worlds biggest ball of yarn, or a REALLY good bar en route.

Train. That's when I really fell in love with google maps. It's the best for trains.

Eh.. you think opening, locking and unlocking the door for you, the fuckin thing steers and brakes too! And when it decides to apply brakes, you can't override it. Such a trip.

Fuck that, I think id need to change my underwear a lot more often. Really increase the washing load in the household. Not to mention all the time I would spend shouting at the car... Old fashioned GPS were bad enough, but the car-deciding to put the brakes on...WITCHCRAFT
