In this post, I'm going to talk about the second leg of my trip to Guadeloupe, the island of Désirade.
It's a small island to the east of the two main islands, Haute-Terre and Basse-Terre.
Indeed, it may not seem obvious when you look at a map, but Guadeloupe, which vaguely resembles a butterfly, is actually made up of two islands.
Here's the story:
The islands emerge in the Caribbean as a result of the continuous sliding of the oceanic plate under the Caribbean (continental) plate by about 2cm per year over millions of years.
Haute-Terre (the eastern part) is the oldest, the first to emerge, then to be submerged again and covered with coral.
Then Basse-Terre emerged, the youngest part with volcanic activity (the great soufrière).
Haute-Terre has emerged again, and there's a small separation from Basse-Terre that's barely visible on a map. It's the salt river that you have to cross to get from one part of Guadeloupe to the other, and which is responsible for much of the traffic congestion.
Returning to Désirade, it's a small island of around 11km by 2km, much of it a limestone plateau with little access except by footpaths, making it a good destination for hikers.
This island is populated mainly by fishermen who, according to the discussions I had on the spot, are quite wealthy from their activity.
But their life, punctuated by fishing, leads them to build beautiful houses and to stay in them when they return from work.
So there's not much going on in Désirade, apart from the tourists, but they generally only stay for the day, arriving around 8-9am on the shuttle boat and leaving around 4-5pm.
In the evening, it's pretty quiet, but I'd say that's the case pretty much everywhere in Guadeloupe, once night falls, at around 6pm, people head home.
However, we were lucky enough to enjoy some great entertainment with members of carnival groups who spent the night on the island waiting for shuttle rotations.
The two nights we spent in La Désirade, we stayed at the Hotel Oasis, which had good reviews; it's a simple hotel but clean and close to everything, especially the beach where I intended to have breakfast, which I did to my great pleasure. (This was one of my main goals when preparing my trip).
The receptionist was very friendly and gave us good advice, particularly on bike hire, but also on snorkeling sites.
So we toured the island by bike, stopping at all the good beaches, where there was hardly anyone, and on one photo you can see that they are laid out with small covered structures with a table and benches, called Carbets (named after the ancient native Amerindian dwellings).
In some places, there were lots of conch shells, which are prized for their meat (we tasted Lambi at the restaurant, which is very good, but a little more expensive than the other dishes).
They can also be used as a musical instrument, cut to order at the Pointe à Pitre fish market for 60€, and given a special tone.
Another name for Désirade is l'ile aux iguanes (the iguana island). We came across one in town, then others during our trip; they are often motionless and difficult to distinguish in the wild.
When we left, we had a beautiful sunset and saw a bird, a frigatebird, identifiable by its bifid tail, which I'll talk about in another post.

Dans ce post, je vais parler de la deuxième étape de mon voyage en Guadeloupe, l'ile de la Désirade.
C'est une petite ile à l'est des deux iles principales, Haute-Terre et Basse-Terre.
En effet, ça ne semble pas évident quand on regarde une carte, mais la Guadeloupe qui ressemble vaguement à un papillon est bien constituée de deux iles.
Voilà l'histoire:
Les iles émergent dans les caraïbes par le glissement continu d'environ 2cm par an de la plaque océanique sous la plaque caraïbéenne (continentale) à l'échelle de millions d'années.
Haute-Terre (la partie à l'est) est la plus ancienne c'est la première a avoir émergé, elle a ensuite été de nouveau immergée et s'est recouverte de coraux.
Puis c'est Basse-Terre qui a émergé, c'est la partie la plus jeune avec une activité volcanique (la grande soufrière).
Haute-Terre a de nouveau émergé et il y a une petite séparation avec Basse-Terre peu visible sur une carte, c'est la rivière salée qu'il faut traverser pour pour passer d'une partie de la Guadeloupe à l'autre et qui est responsable d'une grande partie des embouteillages.
Revenons à la Désirade, c'est une petite ile d'environ 11Km sur 2Km, une grande partie est constituée d'un plateau calcaire et peu accessible à part par des chemins, ce qui en fait une bonne destination pour les randonneurs.
Cette ile est peuplée principalement de pêcheurs qui selon les échanges que j'ai eu sur place sont assez riches de par leur activité.
Mais leur vie, rythmée par la pêche les amène à se construire de belles maisons et à y rester quand ils reviennent du travail.
Il y a donc assez peu d'animation à la Désirade, à part celle crée par les touristes, mais ils restent en général seulement à la journée, arrivée vers 8-9h par la navette maritime et départ vers 16-17h.
Le soir c'est donc assez calme, mais je dirais que c'est le cas un peu partout en Guadeloupe, une fois la nuit tombée, vers 18h, les gens rentrent chez eux.
Nous avons cependant eu la chance de bénéficier d'une belle animation avec les membres de groupes de carnaval qui ont passé la nuit sur l'ile en attente de rotations de la navette.
Les deux nuits que nous avons passé à la Désirade, nous avons dormi à l'hotel Oasis qui avait de bons commentaires, c'est un hotel simple mais propre et proche de tout, en particulier de la plage où j'avais l'intention de prendre mon petit déjeuner, ce que j'ai fait à mon plus grand plaisir. (C'était un de mes objectifs principaux lors de la préparation de mon voyage)
La réceptionniste était très sympathique et nous a donné de bons conseils, en particulier pour la location de vélos, mais aussi pour les sites de snorkeling.
Nous avons donc visité l'ile en vélo en nous arrêtant à toutes les bonnes plages, il n'y avait pratiquement personne, sur une photo vous voyez qu'elles sont aménagées avec de petites structures couvertes avec une table et des bancs, appelés Carbets (du nom des anciennes habitations amérindiennes autochtones).
Par endroit il y avait plein de conques (coquillages), elles sont recherchées pour leur leur chair (nous avons gouté au restaurant, c'est le Lambi, c'est très bon, mais un peu plus cher que les autres plats.
Elles servent aussi d'instrument de musique avec une découpe adaptée, on peut en trouver au marché au poissons de Pointe à Pitre pour 60€, et demander une tonalité particulière.
Un autre nom de la Désirade est l'ile aux iguanes, nous en avons croisé une en ville, puis d'autres durant notre voyage, ils sont souvent immobiles et difficiles à distinguer dans la nature.
lors de notre départ nous avons eu un beau coucher de soleil et nous avons vu un oiseau, une frégate, identifiable à sa queue bifide, j'en reparlerai dans un autre post.
