It had been a while since I last explored places in my own region, but I recently did so by returning to the Jaguari River, one of the main rivers that runs through the area where I live.
This time, however, I set out to find swimming spots a bit farther from the ones I already knew. Luckily, with the help of Google Maps, I found a really interesting spot that we’ll call Jaguari River Beach—a short stretch of actual sand (yes, really) along the riverbank.
It’s worth mentioning that the route from the district of Sousas in Campinas toward the town of Pedreira, where this beach and this stretch of the Jaguari River are located, is already a beautiful journey in itself.
Along the way, you can spot many old farms and a landscape dominated by rolling mountains, making the trip well worth it.
Normally, this river is lined with beautiful rock formations, so discovering a sandy area that truly forms a beach in the middle of the river was a pleasant surprise. Since it was a Sunday, the place was quite crowded, so we decided to take a walk and return later in the afternoon for a more peaceful experience.
Unfortunately, people around here tend to bring speakers to these kinds of spots, which ruins my experience of simply listening to the sounds of nature. I’m not entirely sure if the water in this river is completely safe for swimming, but it looked clean and was full of fish—who, by the way, were hungry enough to nibble at my feet.
From the road, the access to the beach is through a small trail. It’s easy to walk, but the downside is that, even on this trail, there was a lot of trash.
A lot of trash. I really don’t understand how people can leave so much garbage, especially plastic, in such a beautiful place. It’s 2025, how is this still possible?
My tip is to visit on a weekday, if possible, as it will be much quieter, and of course, bring a bag to collect your own trash.
These black stains on the sand seemed like remnants of bonfires from earlier. At least, I couldn’t find any other explanation for these darker marks on the sand.
Unfortunately, I didn’t take any photos while the sun was still high, but it was a beautiful sight to see the water even clearer and more transparent under the sunlight.
I really want to try going back on a quieter day. To sum it up, it was a conflicting experience that stirred mixed feelings in me. Despite the place being wonderful, it’s very close to the town of Pedreira, and that makes it suffer from the thoughtless interventions of people.
