Share Our World: Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri

in Worldmappinlast year

In June I went to St. Louis, Missouri to see Chihuly at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. It was great!

My friend Sara met me in St. Louis at the arch. I grew up calling in it the St. Louis Arch, it is really called the Gateway Arch.

We walked around the base, rode to the top of the arch and took a river cruise on the Mississippi to see the arch from the river.

It his 630-foot-tall (192 m) and was completed in 1965. It is now sitting in the Gateway National Park. Yay! Another park to add to my US National Park Collection.

There is a great green space surrounding the base of the arch that people can walk around. People are also welcome to go to the museum, gift shop and eatery under the arch. You also access the top of the arch from under it.

It costs about $15 USD to ride to the top of the arch. If you are really claustrophobic I do not recommend it. We were put in a group of 4 adults and it was a pretty tight squeeze into the little pod that take you up and over the arch.

We entered into the little door on the left. They said that the mechanism that is able to go up and over the arch is a combination of escalator, elevator and Ferris wheel.

We made it and it! It was worth it for the great views from the top.

Looking at St. Louis, Missouri

Looking at the Mississippi River and Illinois

After going to the top we went on an hour boat ride on the Mississippi to see the arch from the river.

Tickets for the riverboat cruise are $24 USD for adults. I enjoyed it and wanted so see and experience more of St. Louis!

Here are some black and white pictures I took on the boat. We went under a couple of bridges while on the river.

It was a fun way to spend the afternoon in St. Louis.
