Summer vacation in Croatia (Kastela)

in Worldmappin3 years ago

Kaštela is a beautiful Croatian seaside resort located in the region of Dalmatia, along the Adriatic coast between the town of Solin (a suburb of Split) and the village of Divulje (a suburb of Trogir). To the south, the castle is bounded by the clear waters of a fantastic bay, and to the north - a mountain range covered with pine forests, which creates a unique healing microclimate in the city.

Kastela is a very quiet and peaceful city, it is ideal for recreation for the elderly and families with young children, and for newlyweds in love.

In fact, the castle consists of seven separate towns:

  • Kastel Suchurats
  • Gomilitsa Kastel
  • Kastel Kambelovac
  • Kastel Luksic
  • Kastel Stari
  • Kastel Novi
  • Kastel Stafilic

There are two main highways running through the whole city - the Adriatic Highway, which is known as the John Paul II Highway within the Castle, and Franjo Tudjman Street. These highways, which cross the Castle from west to east, are the best way to get around the city, and from them, it is easier to navigate the location of your hotel or villa.

Kastela is almost 20 km of beautiful coastline, along which the beaches are replaced by the promenade, and she in turn - the next beach. Some beaches are pebble, some - sandy. Around the coast are palaces and villas of the Venetian period, which are perfectly preserved to this day, as well as numerous restaurants, summer cafes, souvenir shops and colourful markets.

The castle was founded by the ancient Greeks, but in Roman times lost its significance in the shadow of the neighbouring Salona. The port of Castella fell into disrepair, but Roman veterans began to settle here, attracted by the unique local climate and warm sea.

After the collapse of the Roman Empire, Castella passed from hand to hand many times, sharing the fate of neighbouring Split and Trogir, until it finally became part of the Venetian Republic (1420). Wealthy inhabitants of Split and natives of Venice built luxurious estates in the Castle, which served as summer residences of the Venetian nobility.

Thirteen fortresses were built along the coast to protect the city from attacks by Turkish and Arab pirates. To this day, only seven of them have survived, which gave the name of the town of Kastel (Kaštel in Croatian is a fortress or fortification).

Grapes, figs and olives are grown around the Castle, as well as wine, cheese and honey. Hundreds of restaurants, bars and nightclubs are located along the coast, where entertainment and fun last until the morning. The local cuisine is famous for its fish and seafood dishes, fried and smoked meats, fresh vegetables and fruits. Concerts and festivals are often held on the waterfront, especially on holidays and weekends. You can also go cycling, rent a yacht, go diving or go hiking in the surrounding mountains, which offer fantastic views of the city and the bay.

those are some amazing old structures, and thinking how they manage to survive that long and under the threat of the pirate is awesome. :)
