A Shady Corner in a Busy City

in Worldmappin25 days ago

Living in a big city has as many privileges as it seems. But sometimes it just feels too busy. Fast phase, crowded traffic, noise. All of these things often make me feel overwhelmed. So I try to find a cozy little space to do my works every once in a while.

Oma Karyo, from Javanese words which mean “house for creating” sort of, is located in South Surabaya. I first discovered it on social media, and wanted to go there for a long time. But because my purpose of going to a cafe is to do some works, so I need wifi. And somehow, I doubt this place has stable wifi. But still, I want to give it a try.

The journey to get to this place passes through busy roads with traffic. But then, I entered a fairly shady residential area. And there it is, Oma Karyo. The first one I saw was green, the second was brown. Yes, shady trees surround the wooden furnitures, plus a cool breeze.

This place has a village-like kind of vibes, with all the simple but nostalgic decorations. They even have vespas which are so lovely to look at and give a bit of a retro touch to the place. There are spots for people to gather, but there are also corners for people like me who come alone.

The menu prices are affordable in my opinion. I ordered peach tea and (a typical) Indomie, which were served in a cup and a bowl with those legendary chicken logo that felt so nostalgic. This place also carries the lesswaste concept, one example is by not providing single-use plastic straws. I don't always carry a reusable straw, but this time I kept one in my bag.

Back to my main goal of doing some works, it turns out the wifi here is quite stable. I don't think I can complain about anything because the service is also very good and the staffs are friendly. The toilet is quite clean, and there is a corner for prayer too.

Perhaps one thing that is uncertain is the atmosphere because of the visitors. After the first visit, I have returned twice. And each visit has a different feel depending on the type of visitor. If there are lots of visitors hanging out in groups, the atmosphere will be less calm and quite noisy. Yes, I know, most places are probably like that and I can just plug in my earphones.

So overall, this place is highly recommended for those who want to escape from the busy city of Surabaya. A great place to relax, chat or do homework surrounded by shady trees and plants in every corner, with affordable menu.
