Welcome to the continuation of the notes from my travels around the island of Gran Canaria at Christmas last year. Today we will look for the first time in the northern part of the island, which is completely different from what we have seen so far.
By the eighth day, which was December 25, 2023, we woke up to another cold morning as we slept above the 1500 meter mark again. Exactly 1650 meters. Nobody wanted to get out of a warm sleeping bag. Only when the sun started to warm the surrounding air did we start to move around the area. Which was a pine forest that probably burned down a few years back.
We continued on our way a little before noon. The route continued through the forest, where were mainly pine trees, but also the occasional edible chestnut. All trees met the same fate when they met the fire. Most of them coped with adversity and continued with their lives.
Většina z nich si s nepřízní živlu poradila a pokračovala svým životem.
As soon as we left the forest. An open landscape awaited us, where the remains of volcanic activity could be seen.
Jakmile jsme opustili les. Čekala nás otevřená krajina, kde byli vidět pozůstatky sopečné činnosti.
While exploring the map, we noticed that there is a deep caldera called Caldera de los Pinos de Gáldar not far from our path. Oncoming clouds spoiled our view. On the other hand, one raven noticed our presence and started discreetly begging for some food. For posing, he was given a piece of fatty salami, which we thought was the least harmful compared to the natural diet these birds eat.
Na druhou stranu si naší přítomnosti všiml jeden krkavec a začal nenápadně žebrat nějaké jídlo. Za pózování dostal kousek tučného salámu, což nám přišlo jako nejmíň škodlivé oproti přirozené stravě, kterou tyto ptáci požírají.
After the photo session with raven, we continued on our way to the woods. On the edge of the caldera grow several enormous pines, which are considered the founders of the local forests, since the island was completely deforested in the past.
Not long, a completely new landscape opened up in front of us, which we definitely did not expect here. And that landscape was grassland. A beautifully open landscape overgrown with fresh grass. It was a sudden change that seemed to teleport us somewhere in South East Africa.
Za nedlouho se před námi otevřela úplně nová krajina, kterou jsme zde rozhodně nečekali. A tou krajinou byly pastviny.
The pastures were sometimes interspersed with orchards of all kinds of fruit, but the only thing available at that time were figs. Only for wild birds who didn't mind not being ripe.
Since we started the journey late. The evening was fast approaching and we had to find a place for sleep. We chose one small meadow, from which there was a wonderful view of the surroundings. But it had one small flaw, there was nowhere to hide from the wind. But the place had potential for morning photoshoot, so we were left exposed to the unpleasant wind.

This forest is amazing. With out pine tree which trees are available there.
Most of the forests are made up of Pinus canariensis, with occasional Castanea Sativa and various types of shrubs in the undergrowth. Eucalyptus was seen in some places. And that's about all I met in Gran Canaria. More species grow on other islands more in the Atlantic Ocean.
That was such an amazing hike to Gran Canaria! Lots of stunning views both on the way there but also when the hike came to an end!
The hike is slowly coming to an end, but we still wandered around the island for a few more days, so there is no end to the views and interesting places.
Looking forward to see more!
The natural scenery is very beautiful, I really like natural photos like this, it's very beautiful, friend
Simply loved the raven photos!
It was a nice and scary experience to be so close to a wild animal. That I could photograph him with a wide-angle lens and we both trusted each other that we wouldn't hurt each other.
🥰
Beautiful landscape with pine trees. Nice captured
Gorgeous views here. This mountain is almost as high as the highest mountain we have here in my country.
We in the Czech Republic have the highest mountain with a height of 1602 meters, so we are quite similar with that.
The nature is soo beautiful. I like this post very much!!! :)
This looks absolutely incredible! Great blog
Thank you, I'm trying my best.
