Hace poco revisando mi galería de imágenes, me encontré con este montón de fotografías de una salida que hice con mi familia y algunos amigos que ya reconocerán. Antes de continuar debo dejar en claro que no me gustan los Zoológicos, me parece el lugar más triste del mundo después de los cementerios. No hay nada más bonito que apreciar un animal en su hábitat natural y que todos los zoológicos del mundo deberían ser clausurados.
En la primera semana de enero, nuestro querido @franchalad me avisó para invitarnos a ir de paseo por un sitio bastante icónico de esta ciudad: el Acuario de Valencia. Se lo propuse a mi padre, @hiramdo y a mi hermana y ellos estuvieron ampliamente de acuerdo, sobre todo porque nuestro plan de este año era salir al menos todos los fines de semana para despejarnos y desconectarnos de los aparatos. Claro, no lo hacemos por completo porque aprovecho de tomar fotografías, pero ustedes me entienden.
Yo conocía el acuario de Valencia, pero fui cuando era muy niña. En mi memoria más lejana recuerdo haber sido mojada por unas toninas que hacían un acto en una piscina que tenía el sitio y que era la atracción principal. Hace unos años esta tonina falleció y la piscina, por fortuna, está clausurado y espero que para siempre.
Zoológico de contacto
Al llegar al sitio, aproximadamente a las 2:00 pm, y después de pagar la entrada que costó 1 $ por persona aproximadamente, empezó la trayectoria que como todo lo que hemos hecho, siempre pensamos que será más corta de lo que siempre es. Lo primero que nos conseguimos es con un zoológico de contacto y unas jaulas con Guacamayas, loros y un pavo real. En el zoológico de contacto, que creo que no es el término adecuado, porque yo ni loca le meto la mano a un avestruz que se veía de todo menos amistoso. También había un burro, bueyes, conejos, tortugas, cerdos. En ese momento los estaban alimentando y lo que realmente me gustó, aparte de ver a los animales gorditos es que el sitio donde se encontraban estaba muy limpio. Se nota que tienen muy bien cuidado a estos animales, así que por ahí sentí que no iba a sufrir por ellos.

Acuario
Luego de haber recorrido el sitio en el que tenían a los animales de granja, pasamos al acuario. Y era tal cual como esperaba. Un sitio grande con muchas peceras. Tenían muchos ejemplares, tantos, que si montara todas las fotografías que saqué del sitio, se haría interminable. Todos los peces presentes acá forman parte de la biodiversidad que conforman los ríos y mares venezolanos a excepción del pez león, que si no lo sabían es una especie invasora que proviene del océano pacífico. Esta especie se propagó luego de que se rompieran las peceras de unos acuarios en New Orleans durante el paso del huracán Katrina. Así que la orden para todos los pescadores que se encuentran en el Mar Caribe es exterminarlos a como de lugar porque está arrasando con los pecesitos pequeños de nuestro hermoso mar y amenaza con desaparecer con especies por no tener un depredador natural de la zona. Así que ya saben, si alguna vez están pescando en el Mar caribe y se encuentran con este, véanlo como lo que es: un enemigo, caliente un aceite y échelo a freír sin ningún tipo de remordimiento.

Zoológico
Y llegamos a una parte que no esperaba, el largo camino que tuvimos que recorrer para poder ver a los animales encerrados en sus jaulas: Un Jaguar, un cunaguaro y un puma, felinos americanos. Teníamos cocodrilos y caimanes. Muchos tipos de monos. Gavilanes, loros, zorros y zorrillos. Y muchísimos otros. Lo que más me sorprendió, aparte de lo bien que se veían, es que todos los animales que se encuentran en este acuario son originarios de nuestro territorio. Ninguno proviene de otro país, así que esto hace un poco especial este Zoológico. Otra cosa especial es la cantidad de escaleras que hay que subir y bajar, así que nos tocó ejercitarnos porque el zoológico era más grande de lo que estaba esperando. Muchas veces tuvimos que parar porque nos quedábamos a esperar a mi papá que se paraba a conversar con otros visitantes, tomaba fotografías o le maullaba a los felinos como si fueran gatos.

Serpentario
Llegamos al lugar más terrorífico de todos, la verdad es que no pude tomar muchas fotografías porque mi cerebro se esforzaba por no huir despavorida, Solo me tranquilizaba saber que las serpientes estaban detrás de un vidrio y no al aire libre como alguna vez me las encontré en mis salidos de campo cuando estudiaba Biología. Sé que a muchos les parece fascinante, como a mi sobrino Alejandro, que estaba claramente emocionado con todas las serpientes mientras yo las iba viendo de reojo. No sé en qué momento empezó esta fobia, pero no es muy vieja, sé que fue antes de mis salidas de campo, pero no de siempre. Creo que al saber que son capaces de asesinar de una u otra forma me originó una fobia mayor, así que como no soy tan masoquista. Le di la vuelta al lugar y salí a buscar algo de comer.

¿Qué hacemos con los animales?
Luego de salir del sitio, nos dirigimos a comer. Habían varias opciones pero optamos por unos perros calientes. Hubo un impase que no vale la pena mencionar pero comimos rico.
En cuanto a los animales, es bastante complicado. Porque lo mejor para que no existan más Zoológicos es que no vayamos más a ellos. Los mismos amantes de los animales somos los que propiciamos esto, de sacar a un pobre animal de su medio y enjaularlos para que vengamos a verlo. Altera todo, hasta nuestra percepción como seres humanos hacia un animal al que primordialmente deberíamos temerle y nos acercamos como si nada porque unos barrotes nos separan de ellos. Esperemos que poco a poco empiecen a mermar los zoológicos, y que nosotros nos enfoquemos en que apreciemos la naturaleza de otra manera. Como salir a un sitio y ver volar un ave, o caminar a un pequeño animal en alguna zona alejada de la civilización. Mientras tanto yo, seguiré esperando a los pajaritos a que canten cada mañana en mi ventana, o ver a las ardillas en los árboles.

Recently I was going through my image gallery and I came across this bunch of pictures of an outing I did with my family and some friends that you will recognize. Before I continue I must make it clear that I don't like Zoos, I find them the saddest place in the world after cemeteries. There is nothing more beautiful than appreciating an animal in its natural habitat and that all zoos in the world should be closed.
In the first week of January, our dear @franchalad gave me a heads up to invite us to go for a walk around a rather iconic place in this city: the Aquarium of Valencia. I proposed it to my dad, @hiramdo and my sister and they broadly agreed, especially since our plan this year was to go out at least every weekend to clear our heads and disconnect from gadgets. Of course, we don't do it completely because I take the opportunity to take pictures, but you know what I mean.
I knew the aquarium in Valencia, but I went there when I was a child. In my distant memory I remember being wet by some dolphins that were performing in a pool that was the main attraction of the place. A few years ago this dolphin passed away and the pool, fortunately, is now closed and I hope for good.
Contact zoo
Arriving at the site, at approximately 2:00 pm, and after paying the entrance fee which cost about $ 1 per person, we started the journey that like everything we have done, we always think it will be shorter than it always is. The first thing we came across was a contact zoo and some cages with Macaws, parrots, and a peacock. In the contact zoo, which I don't think is the right term, because I wouldn't touch an ostrich that looked anything but friendly. There was also a donkey, oxen, rabbits, turtles, pigs. At that moment they were feeding them and what I really liked, apart from seeing the chubby animals, is that the place where they were was very clean. You can tell that they take very good care of these animals, so I felt that I was not going to suffer for them.

Aquarium
After we had toured the place where the farm animals were kept, we went to the aquarium. And it was just as I expected. A big place with many fish tanks. They had many specimens, so many that if I were to mount all the pictures I took of the place, it would be endless. All the fish present here are part of the biodiversity that make up the Venezuelan rivers and seas, except for the lionfish, which if you didn't know is an invasive species that comes from the Pacific Ocean. This species spread after the fish tanks of some aquariums in New Orleans were broken during Hurricane Katrina. So the order for all fishermen in the Caribbean Sea is to exterminate them at any cost because it is destroying the small fish of our beautiful sea and threatens to disappear with species for not having a natural predator in the area. So now you know if you are ever fishing in the Caribbean Sea and you come across this one, see it for what it is: an enemy, heat up some oil and fry it without any remorse.

Zoo
And we got to a part that I did not expect, the long way we had to walk to see the animals locked in their cages: a Jaguar, an ocelot, and a puma, American felines. We had crocodiles and alligators. Many types of monkeys. Sparrowhawks, parrots, foxes, and skunks. And many, many others. What surprised me the most, besides how good they looked, is that all the animals in this aquarium are native to our territory. None of them come from another country, so this makes this Zoo a little special. Another special thing is the amount of stairs to climb up and down, so we had to exercise because the zoo was bigger than I was expecting. Many times we had to stop because we were waiting for my dad who would stop to talk to other visitors, take pictures or meow at the cats as if they were cats.

Serpentarium
We arrived at the most terrifying place of all, the truth is that I could not take many pictures because my brain struggled not to flee in terror, I was only reassured to know that the snakes were behind glass and not out in the open as I once found them in my field trips when I studied biology. I know many people find this fascinating, like my nephew Alejandro, who was clearly excited about all the snakes while I was watching them out of the corner of my eye. I don't know when this phobia started, but it's not very old, I know it was before my field trips, but not forever. I think that knowing that they are capable of murder in one way or another gave me a greater phobia, so since I'm not that masochistic. I turned the place around and went out to get something to eat.

What do we do with the animals?
After leaving the site, we headed out for lunch. There were several options but we opted for some hot dogs. There was an impasse that is not worth mentioning but we ate well.
As for the animals, it is quite complicated. Because the best thing for there to be no more zoos is for us not to go to them anymore. The same animal lovers are the ones who encourage this, to take a poor animal out of their environment and cage them so that we come to see them. It alters everything, even our perception as human beings towards an animal that we should primarily fear and we approach as if nothing because some bars separate us from them. Let's hope that little by little the zoos begin to diminish, and that we focus on appreciating nature in a different way. Like going out somewhere and seeing a bird fly, or walking a small animal in an area far away from civilization. In the meantime, I will continue to wait for the birds to sing outside my window every morning, or watch the squirrels in the trees.

Hahaha. It happens. Here in Venezuela there is also Barcelona, just like in Spain.
Your post is very cool, the photos were great and the photo of the aquarium, with the blue background, was great, you look very pretty in that picture.
I recently went to the zoo there in bqto, it's a cool experience but one enters as a short circuit, because it's nice to see animals that one normally does not see, but it's also sad to see them locked up.
It happened to me mostly when I got to the bird habitat, where I saw sparrow hawks and birds like that locked up, being that they are animals that normally should be flying.
I once asked a friend who worked at inparques why zoos exist and he told me that they have their purpose, to preserve the lives of animals that grew up in captivity, otherwise they would die in the wild if released. He also told me that if there are endangered species there they can be kept without fear of illegal hunting... one could believe this, but it happens that not always zoos have the best conditions for the animals, they don't always take good care of them...
At least in this zoo you visited they looked well cared for. When you said about the animals in the contact zoo it reminded me of this GIF at the end:

Jajajajaja. Yo fui al zoológico de Barquisimeto y por allí tengo las fotos guardadas, la experiencia no fue la mismas. Creo que los animales allí si están mal, los ví tristes y desanimados, muchos no podían ni estar en pie, pero en ese caso es porque están muy mal alimentados. Se les notaba en el pelaje, todos desaliñados. Eso me entristeció mucho.
Muchos tienen la excusa del cautiverio, en el de acá pasa lo mismo pero si me consta que hay personas que llevan culebras y algunos animales que consiguen por ahí. Pero no lo sé... Igual si estaban bien alimentados porque se ven mucho más pilas. Y al cobrar una entrada un poco elevada, está la oportunidad de contribuir con la alimentación de los animales. 1$ no es mucho, pero creo que alcanza para comprar muchas cosas. El día que yo fui estaba muy lleno!

Es importante que hagamos conciencia propia al respecto, pero es bien difícil que dejen de existir estos lugares. También porque más que para retener cualquier cantidad de especies deberian más bien ser santuarios para la preservación de la mismas y sabemos que por lo menos aquí esa no es la idea.

Hola natalia, super interesante tu post, me gusta que dejes en claro tu posición critica ante la realidad de los animales en cautiverio y que sin reserva expreses tu sentir; no soy amiga de los zoológicos pero si recuerdo con cariño a las toninas del acuario que daban un gran espectáculo, afortunadamente la ley protege a estos animalitos a que sean mantenidos en su hábitat natural en el rio Orinoco y por esa razón ya no existe esa atracción, además, que las que estuvieron acá en Valencia nacieron en cautiverio y así se mantuvieron hasta sus últimos días, me gusto todo tu recorrido menos el serpentario nunca me ha gustado, las serpientes de lejos mientras mas lejos mejor jejeje.
