My BiL lives in Hamilton and every time we drive past and I see a sign for the park I wonder how such a French sounding place ends up in Hamilton.

Same here - I've known about it for years, but never gone, and only went by chance last week. Interestingly wikipedia says the following about the name:
"Its name is derived from the French town of Châtellerault, the title Duc de Châtellerault having been granted to James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran in 1548 for his part in arranging the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots, to Francis, Dauphin of France."
