A Venezuelan sees you eating arepa with cutlery and is sure to be offended, hahaha. I think they recommended something very heavy to start with, I'm sure there were better options than an arepa of pabellón. And yes, the price is expensive, hahaha, here an arepa of that size would cost around 5$.
