TacoCat’s Travels #141 (Malacca): Getting Fancy for Wedding Dinner!

Hey Hive!

So if you missed the last post, we're currently on a brand new journey back in early Feb 2019 when we went on a road trip to Malacca City, Malaysia, for my cousin's wedding! It had been over a decade since we last visited Malacca and it also gave us a chance to reunite with our relatives again, just in time for Chinese New Year!

Last week, we started the actual wedding day with the traditional wedding door games also called "gatecrashing"! It was kinda cringe to watch the bridal party make a fool of themselves as the groom proves himself through humiliating trials to get to his bride. But after that we had the tea ceremony and then to kill some time, Sean and I went exploring along Jonker Street!

The famous Jonker Street in Malacca is known for its numerous historical sites and is also a haven for antiques, bargains and vintage fashion! There's also a ton of street art there and even a night market! It's basically a touristy hipster place that's actually worth visiting!

2 February 2019. Saturday.

But anyway, we spent the afternoon walking around but didn't have time to actually see the night market in its primetime since we had to go back to the hotel and get ready for the wedding dinner!

I was pretty tired after we got back but quickly took a shower, and my sis-in-law did some makeup for me and made me look pretty! We all got dressed up in our nice dresses and went down to the ballroom.

The bride and groom looked so lovely! And I thought my cousin's dress was just beautiful!

We killed some time before the staff said we could be seated by taking a crap ton of photos! The dress I was wearing was also the one I wore to my brother's wedding dinner a couple years ago. I really liked the colour and it was really comfy too! I kinda felt like we were slightly overdressed compared to the other guests, but whatever. I liked it.

Here's my mum, her sisters and my grandmother:

I wanted more pics with Sean but soon it was time to go in and find our seats so we went in first.

Sean was also dressed really smartly with that cute sky blue bow tie that matched my dress. I suggested he get that for the first wedding we attended and it's kinda become our default wedding outfit now. Sean said that my arms looked too buff for this dress though but I like being strong so sue me.

There was still some down time before the dinner actually began so we went back out to take a walk and freshen up. Also to grab more photos with less people around! My brother and sis-in-law had a kind of Mr and Mrs. Smith thing going on:

I think I was too small for the chair though.

Mirror selfie time! Because that's pretty much the only way we could get a full body pic together.

After a bunch more photos, we headed back to the ballroom when we heard they were starting soon. This was the menu that the bride and groom had picked out:

Everything looked pretty promising, but I was hoping the shark's fin soup was going to be the fake one.

This was the host of the reception tonight. I think he was employed with the hotel but I honestly can't remember.

There was also quite the musical performance, with a saxophonist walking down the aisle before the happy couple came out!

The lighting in the room was pretty bad though since everything was tinted purple other than the those in the spotlight.

It was pretty cliche but lovely, and they went up on stage to cut the cake.

And while waiting for the food to be served, there was some nice music and the video slideshow from the photos this morning!

We were pretty impressed with how fast the photography studio came out with the video! I thought it was going to be from a photoshoot they did but it wasn't; it was from the tea ceremony just a few hours ago!

While watching the video, we were served the first 3 courses which were the hors d'oeuvres:

shark's fin soup:

and Mongolian style crispy fried chicken:

and steamed red snapper:

Now you see what I mean about the lighting. It was pretty terrible ngl.

Then the bride and groom took the stage again and did the whole cross arm champagne drinking thing. I'm not sure what's the point of that but yea just another cliche wedding thing that people do.

And then we had the classic family-led yam seng which is a Chinese tradition. The words are actually in Cantonese that literally means “drink to victory," and with everyone's glasses in the air the family will lead on stage and shout out, “yam~~~~~~~~~~~" for as long as possible until they ran out of breath before they shout "seng!” It is thought that the longer they drag on the yam seng, the more blessings will come.

Then we watched more of the video montage from this morning while waiting for more dinner courses.

The next dish to get served was the braised broccoli with mushrooms and beancurd:

I might've forgotten to take one of the dishes, but we also had the fried prawns and this was the fried rice in lotus leaf:

And for dessert we had chilled mango in sago cream:

I was so stuffed after the dinner! All the dishes were so delicious!

We took some more photos after that while everything was winding down.

And my mum actually took a nice photo of us!

After that we were pretty exhausted and just chilled in our rooms taking off our makeup and playing some games before going to bed.

The next day we didn't have much time because we were going to drive back to Singapore so we packed up and went to have one last breakfast together!

3 February 2019. Sunday.

So we went to the nearby mama shop and went to get prata for breakfast! Here's their menu:

We all got plain prata with some curry and chili and ordered some milo of course.

And shared a plate of kway teow:

And also a roti tisu:

It was pretty average but still delicious all the same! And a perfect breakfast for sure.

Everything was so yummy and we were so stuffed which was good since it was going to be a 5 hr roadtrip back. No incidents though so that's good. We arrived safe and sound back in Singapore! What a lovely weekend it was!

And that's actually all for our Malacca trip! It was pretty short since it was just a weekend and we actually went on our Japan trip after this; I kinda screwed up the order. But it was really fun traveling down memory lane and bringing Sean along too!

Hope you guys enjoyed this brief trip in Malacca! Tune in next week for another short trip! Thanks so much for reading!
