Hi Everyone,

One of the places I wanted to visit this time around Mount Fuji was Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba. Right along the shores of Lake Saiko, this cute little village is a perfect place to see a bit of of history, culture, and stunning nature of Fujikawaguchiko. The traditional thatched-roof houses with Mount Fuji in the backdrop make this village a must-visit location.

Originally a farming village, the village was destroyed by a cyclone ruining virtually everything. The village eventually was rebuilt and transformed into an open-air museum. After our drive from Lake Motosuko, we drove 20 minutes to the village. This village is not easily accessible by public transport so it is best to drive or join a local tour to visit. The entry fee is 500 yen per adult and 250 yen per child.

The village isn’t very big and we anticipated to complete the visit in 90 minutes. Each house has been turned into either a museum, workshop, or shops selling local goods, and a few turned into a cafe. If you want to dress up as a samurai, you need to book ahead days before to ensure they have the gear ready for you.

The village is sloped as you walk from the entrance so by the time you end up at the top, you can see a stunning view of Mount Fuji with the village right underneath. Due to the location, there aren’t as many tourists as in Kyoto or Nara so we had a lovely time taking photos and going through each house.

It is recommended to visit when there is no rain as the place is not covered. There is gravel and sand everywhere so dry weather would be the best. When we arrived just after midday, many cafes were not opened for business, mainly due to the cold weather where they anticipate not many tourists will visit. This town is highly rated by many visitors in the area and I would also agree it is a must do to experience another side of Japanese culture with the stunning view of Mount Fuji from another angle.
