There are buildings that almost everyone recognizes at first sight. You have seen them hundreds of times in various media and they are symbols for certain cities, regions or even entire countries. The Golden Gate Bridge is undoubtedly one of them. Hardly any other architectural highlight has such a symbolic power for San Francisco, for California, for the American West Coast and even for the entire USA. I dedicated a whole day of my trip to San Francisco to this impressive bridge. I admired it from various perspectives at different times of the day, visited the five most popular viewpoints and crossed it twice, once even on foot. In this post I would like to tell you about my personal impressions after this exciting day.
Es gibt Bauwerke, die wohl fast jeder auf den ersten Blick erkennt. Man hat sie schon hunderte Male in diversen Medien gesehen und sie sind ein Symbole für gewisse Städte, Regionen oder sogar gesamte Länder. Die Golden Gate Bridge ist zweifellos eines davon. Kaum ein anderes architektonisches Highlight hat eine derartige Symbolkraft für San Francisco, für Kalifornien, für die amerikanische Westküste und sogar für die gesamten USA. Einen ganzen Tag meiner Reise nach San Francisco widmete ich dieser beeindruckenden Brücke. Ich bewunderte sie aus den unterschiedlichsten Perspektiven zu verschiedenen Tageszeiten, besuchte die fünf beliebtesten Aussichtspunkte und überquerte sie zwei Mal, davon einmal sogar zu Fuß. In diesem Beitrag möchte ich euch von meinen persönlichen Eindrücken nach diesem aufregenden Tag berichten.
For almost ten years I dreamed of seeing this structure with my own eyes. Although I traveled so much, somehow it never fit into my plans, but now the time had finally come. I started my day with a bus ride to the north side of the bridge. So I could already cross it for the first time and enjoy some fascinating views during the ride. From the bus stop I walked just under ten minutes to the first viewpoint of the day, the H. Dana Bowers Vista Point. Here you have a beautiful view of San Francisco Bay, the city itself and of course the bridge. At a certain point, you are even exactly on the same axis as the traffic and the bridge piers.
Seit fast zehn Jahren träumte ich davon, dieses Bauwerk mit eigenen Augen zu sehen. Obwohl ich so viel reiste, passte es irgendwie nie in meine Pläne, doch nun war es endlich soweit. Ich startete meinen Tag mit einer Busfahrt an die Nordseite der Brücke. So konnte ich sie bereits zum ersten Mal überqueren und während der Fahrt die ersten faszinierenden Ausblicke genießen. Von der Bushaltestelle spazierte ich knapp zehn Minuten zum ersten Aussichtspunkt des Tages, dem H. Dana Bowers Vista Point. Hier hat man einen wunderschönen Ausblick auf die Bucht von San Francisco, die Stadt selbst und natürlich die Brücke. An einem gewissen Punkt befindet man sich hier sogar exakt auf einer Achse mit dem Verkehr und den Brückenpfeilern.
Did you know that you can walk under the Golden Gate Bridge? I was surprised too, but this was the only way to get to the other side of the road and start the hike to the next viewpoint. So I followed the hiking trail that led through a small forest before I went uphill over a steep slope. In total, the walk took me probably less than 20 minutes to reach my next destination. Nevertheless, the ascent was relatively exhausting.
Wusstet ihr, dass man unter der Golden Gate Bridge hindurchgehen kann? Auch ich war überrascht, doch dies war die einzige Möglichkeit, um zur anderen Straßenseite zu gelangen und die Wanderung zum nächsten Aussichtspunkt anzutreten. So folgte ich dem Wanderpfad, der durch ein Wäldchen führte, bevor es dann über einen steilen Hang bergauf ging. Insgesamt war ich wohl kaum 20 Minuten unterwegs, um mein nächstes Ziel zu erreichen. Trotzdem war der Aufstieg relativ anstrengend.
Battery Spencer is probably the most breathtaking viewpoint around the building at all. How often had I seen the Golden Gate Bridge from this perspective on photos, now I was finally here myself. I could hardly believe it and enjoyed the view of the red shining structure in the midday sun with the skyline of San Francisco in the background extensively. Here you get the best feeling for the dimensions of the bridge. But also the view of the coast and the open sea contributed its part to the fact that this was my absolute favorite viewpoint on that day.
Battery Spencer ist wohl der atemberaubendste Aussichtspunkt rund um die Brücke überhaupt. Wie oft hatte ich die Golden Gate Bridge aus dieser Perspektive schon auf Fotos gesehen, nun war ich endlich selbst hier. Ich konnte es kaum glauben und genoss den Ausblick auf das in der Mittagssonne rot leuchtende Bauwerk mit der Skyline von San Francisco im Hintergrund ausgiebig. Hier bekommt man das beste Gefühl für die Dimensionen der Brücke. Doch auch der Blick auf die Küste und das offene Meer trug seinen Teil dazu bei, dass dies mein absoluter Liebling-Aussichtspunkt an diesem Tag war.
After the descent, crossing the bridge on foot was next on my agenda. This is where I became really aware of its length. It already feels like ages until you reach the first bridge pier. No wonder, because the Golden Gate Bridge has a total length of 2,737 meters and is by far the longest bridge that I have ever crossed on foot. You have to expect to take at least half an hour to cross it, but it's better to plan for an hour, because there's a lot to discover. I found it especially interesting to see many details up close that you overlook from a distance.
Nach dem Abstieg stand für mich die Überquerung der Brücke zu Fuß auf dem Programm. Hier wurde mir ihre Länge erst so richtig bewusst. Es dauert schon gefühlte Ewigkeiten bis man den ersten Brückenpfeiler erreicht. Kein Wunder, denn die Golden Gate Bridge hat eine Länge von insgesamt 2.737 Metern und ist mit Abstand die längste Brücke, die ich jemals zu Fuß überquert habe. Ihr müsst damit rechnen, zumindest eine halbe Stunde lang unterwegs zu sein. Besser plant ihr aber eine Stunde für die Überquerung ein, denn es gibt viel zu sehen. Ich fand es besonders interessant, viele Details aus der Nähe zu betrachten, die man aus der Entfernung übersieht.
Arriving at the south side of the bridge, I reached the next viewpoint called Fort Point. Here you can find the Welcome Center, where you can learn about the history of the bridge and get a lot of facts and numbers about the structure. Meanwhile it was late afternoon and I was already a bit tired. But I still wanted to walk along the coast to Bakers Beach. On the way I passed other viewpoints, such as the Golden Gate Overlook. After about half an hour I went the so-called Sand Ladder – a steep, sandy staircase – downhill to the beach.
An der Südseite der Brücke angekommen, erreichte ich den nächsten Aussichtspunkt namens Fort Point. Hier befindet sich auch das Welcome Center, in dem man sich über die Geschichte der Brücke informieren kann und jede Menge Zahlen, Daten und Fakten rund um das Bauwerk erhält. Mittlerweile war es später Nachmittag und ich war schon etwas müde. Doch ich wollte unbedingt noch die Küste bis zum Bakers Beach entlangspazieren. Unterwegs passierte ich weitere Aussichtspunkte, wie den Golden Gate Overlook. Nach ungefähr einer halben Stunde ging es dann die sogenannte Sand Ladder – eine steile, sandige Treppe – bergab zum Strand.
The evening mood and the view of the bridge with the soft waves in the foreground were really beautiful and the perfect ending for an exhausting, but incredibly fascinating day, which I will not forget so easily. The Golden Gate Bridge is a very special piece of architecture, a symbol of freedom and it has a certain attraction that is hard to resist. You probably notice, my excitement is huge and I can only recommend you to experience this fascination yourself once, if you have the opportunity.
Die Abendstimmung und der Ausblick auf die Brücke mit den sanften Wellen im Vordergrund waren wirklich wunderschön und der perfekte Abschluss für einen anstrengenden, aber unglaublich faszinierenden Tag, den ich so schnell nicht vergessen werde. Die Golden Gate Bridge ist ein ganz besonders Bauwerk, ein Symbol für Freiheit und sie strahlt eine gewisse Anziehung aus, der man sich kaum entziehen kann. Ihr merkt sicher, meine Begeisterung ist groß und ich kann euch nur empfehlen, diese Faszination selbst einmal zu erleben, wenn ihr die Möglichkeit habt.

Yes, it was an awesome day! My favorite viewpoint was Battery Spencer and I think the late afternoon/ evening is the best time to admire the bridge. The red color looks even better in warm light 😊
