There are many great places for barbecue in Texas. In fact, some Texans will occasionally make the weekend pilgrimage to their favorite barbecue spots, which may be hours away. And then, there are local favorite barbecue spots that everybody in town knows and frequents. The Drunken Chicken is one of those local favorites in Mission, Texas.
Despite the name, The Drunken Chicken serves more than barbecued chicken. You can also find ribs, sausage, brisket, and more. Your choice will not arrive covered in barbecue sauce. You'll respectfully get a cup with barbecue sauce on the side, in case your palate prefers it. You'll forgive me for not having pictures of the food. During this visit, I was picking up a large order of takeout. The plates aren't so presentable when you order to go. But, they still taste great.
Prior to The Drunken Chicken opening, the closest good barbecue destination is in Mercedes, Texas. It's not an extremely long drive. But it's not across town either. When The Drunken Chicken opened, it was in an extremely small space with just a handful of tables. Most visitors to Mission, Texas would never have stumbled upon The Drunken Chicken as it is located near First Street and Mayberry Road, which is a crossroads most GPS apps ignore. It wasn't long until they had to expand to the space next door. Recently they opened up a second location on Conway Avenue, which is a main road through town.
You can keep up with The Drunken Chicken on their Facebook Page. In fact, it's better to check with them in advance as they do sell out from time to time. Good barbecue is not rushed. So, they can't just whip up more barbecue on a busy day.
Having said that, if you are on a road trip through South Texas and are near Mission, Texas, then you will appreciate stopping by one of the Drunken Chicken locations for some barbecue.
