Breathtaking landscapes at Belis Lake in Cluj county, Romania

Hello beautiful community

Today's post will be all about nature walks, I am a big lover of getting out in nature and discovering places to share with you.

So beautiful people today I want to go together to visit Belis Lake in Belis commune, Cluj county, Romania.

How did we get here?

I must admit that before arriving here I visited a few other places in another county, while I was close I also visited some relatives, the distance from my home to here is quite a long one (around 350 kilometers), as time took us around four and a half hours.

Yes I know, spending so much time in the car is not that comfortable, but even so I still found the energy to visit Lake Belis from several viewpoints points.

The route to the lake is through the middle of nature on some dreamy, even sensational roads.

I was amazed when on the road winding through these amazing woods I found a spring where a water mill was installed.

Honestly, I wanted to stop every minute to take a picture of what I was seeing, so I'll let you see how spectacular nature can be.

Below is some information about the lake.

Belis-Fantanele reservoir belongs to Belis commune, located in Cluj county, at a distance of 77 kilometers S-W from Cluj-Napoca and at an altitude between 1000 and 1300 meters. The locality is situated at the foot of the Vladeasa massif in the Apuseni Mountains, the whole area being furrowed by mountain tourist trails, and the villages that can be met here have that simplicity and wild beauty that is characteristic of Romanian mountain villages.
The creation of the reservoir, a huge water lake of about 900 hectares, was only possible with the transmutation of the Belis village cave about 3 km away, where it is today. The memory of the place and its stories are preserved between the walls of a church that remains at the bottom of the Belis-Fantanele reservoir. Sometimes, when the lake recedes, the walls of the church can be seen, but without the roof and the bell tower, which people managed to take when they moved the village.

The flood story
Before it lay at the bottom of a lake, the old village of Belis was situated in the valley of the Warm Somes, between mountainous hills, and the church on the hill watched over the wooden houses of the Moors. The traditional activities of the locals were woodworking, animal husbandry, family and the church in the centre of the village.
However, in the early 1970s, following the design of the Belis-Fantanele reservoir, people found out that their village was going to be flooded and they were evacuated. So the construction of the new village of Belis began.
One by one, the ox-drawn carts drove up the hill, piece by piece, from the households of Belis. This is how the households were moved along with the lives of the villagers. But the church could not be moved, so it was emptied of icons, religious objects, church vestments, bells and roof, which were also taken up the hill. The only ones that remain are the thick walls of the stone spire, which are visible on dry summer days.

I Can't believe that this beautiful location has an ethnic history as well. The cover photo is stunning. Being close to nature is always relaxing and healing... Thanks for sharing such a panoramic and picturesque location with us.

Have a nice day...

I'm glad you liked my post about Belis lake in Cluj county (Romania), and yes, the history of the lake is a sad one, many people losing everything they have gained all their lives, so that some communist ideas could come to life.
This is a negative example of that period in Romania, you know, at that time nobody had the right to speak, you just executed the order and that's all.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Yes, unfortunate and bitter truth we all know more or less... :(

Yes, I hope that period will never return and that no one will ever experience such a regime again.

Me too...
