Hello travellers,
Own only what you can always carry with you: known languages, known countries, known people. Let your memory be your travel bag.
After days of work, the human body needs rest - a period to restore vitality and energy. Travel is a good time to rejuvenate - it's also a holiday, a weekend, a tourist trip.
Alternatively, a visit to another country is interesting for recreation, in my opinion.
Abroad is a traditional place to rest: unforgettable new emotions, fresh inspiration, mood for creative plans and future work projects.
How can you not get energized when you see such landscapes on your way to the salt mine?
How can you not spend a day here when the salt mine greets you with such a place at the entrance?
Where can we find her?
Wieliczka Saltworks is located in the Kraków metropolitan area, in the town of Wieliczka in southern Poland. The mine is one of the oldest salt mines in the world, still in operation, having been built in the 13th century and produced table salt continuously until 2007.
One such amazing place is Wieliczka located in the heart of Europe. This is in the past, an ancient settlement located on a large territory of a salt mine, which contains many legends and thousands of tons of "white gold".
Commercial logging has stopped since 1996 due to low prices and a fear of destroying the environment and causing flooding.
Useful information,
The journey inside the mine begins with a descent down the 378-step wooden shaft into the first-level chambers.
Also known as the Underground Salt Cathedral of Poland, the Wieliczka Mine, one of the most famous salt mines in the world, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978.
Today, a trip to the Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the highlights of Kraków.
Although only a small part of the vast mine is open for tours, about 3.5km, visitors can take a two-hour journey through some of the most stunning sections of the wonder, namely about 20 rooms and starting at a depth of 64m.
The temperature in the mine is a constant 15 degrees throughout the year.
A wooden staircase with 378 steps allows access to the mine, then an elevator brings tourists to the surface, the mine is arranged on four levels comprising about 300 galleries.
The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the best known and most visited tourist attractions in Poland.
The lift ride takes about 30 seconds and has a capacity of 36 people.
The Wieliczka Salt Mine stands out from all other salt mines in the world because of the beautiful sculptures inside. The mine is decorated with all kinds of statues, chandeliers, chapels and an entire salt cathedral.
I expected the Wieliczka salt to be pure white or crystalline but the salt is predominantly shades of grey and somewhat resembles granite. The Wieliczka salt mine is over 287 kilometres long and up to 327 metres deep.
In this underground world there are caves, exhibition halls, churches, a lake and even a spa, where allergic and respiratory diseases are treated.
The highlight of the tour is the Chapel of St. Kinga, which dates back to the 17th century.
Inside the mine, there are also various pieces of machinery that have helped the miners over the centuries.
The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of Poland's national historical monuments, visited by more than a million visitors every year.
It's hard to say which of these halls is the most beautiful. But the most impressive is the chapel dedicated to Saint Kinga, where you enter from the top and suddenly see her in front of you. It's also called the Salt Cathedral Underground and it's stunningly beautiful. In the centre is the statue of St Kinga, the protector of the salt miners, and the salt walls are carved with biblical scenes.
The trail also takes you to two of the lakes underground, their beauty revealed to you to the music of Chopin as the lights slowly come on, making you discover the wonder before you.
What's good to know about Wieliczka:
-It is advisable to book your ticket in advance on the website,
-Tours are only with guides and are also organised according to the language of the guide,
–The mine is 11 km from Krakow and very easy to reach by car.
Legend,
Since ancient times, a legend has circulated in the area. It is said that Princess Kinga was to marry the Prince of Krakow. Before leaving the parental home, Kinga asks her father for a piece of salt.
The father indulges her, and she hides the engagement ring in it and throws the piece of salt in the region of today's Wieliczka Mine.
After some time she returns and the miners dig a deep hole in the spot she indicated and manage to find the princess's ring. Thus it is said that an eternal relationship, a spiritual bond, was formed between Princess Kinga and Mina Wieliczka.
Did I convince you? Come to the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Krakow, it's worth the effort.
Here you can buy for your loved ones amazing souvenirs, that's exactly what I did, amazingly there is also a restaurant here underground.
Conclusions,
Wieliczka is a gift of nature, enriched by the work of miners over the centuries and a marvel of today's facilities. A place straight out of a fairy tale (which you will also encounter during your visit). A palace of the clammers whose salty walls you can't help but "taste".

I have seen a fragment about the salt mine on the telly. Your post has covered it really well, feels like I walked it through.
I think legends tell stories with a pinch of salt. Perhaps she lost her ring and the salt mine was discovered by pure luck.
Thank you so much for your appreciation, it means a lot to me, I think such places around the world have a legend, which makes them even more appealing.
Oh I've been there before, many, many many years ago! It was super cool, although I wasn't too keen on being underground for that long! Great post.
Thank you very much for your appreciations, personally I really like to visit former salt mines, in one of the next posts I will talk about another salt mine but in Romania which is also very spectacular, and I intend to visit another former gold mine which is quite close to me and this one is also spectacular.
Greetings!
The landscape towards the salt mine looks gorgeous! So it's good to switch off, right?! 15 degrees are actually quite human. The wooden staircase looks so unreal in the picture, but very nice.
If you ever get to Krakow Poland, it's worth taking a whole day to visit this salt mine and its surroundings.
Thanks for the tip! I will definitely visit it if I have a chance to get there :)
