Wooden church in the village of Sebiș (over 270 years old), Bihor county, Romania
Hello travelers
The weekend that just passed was a busy one for me, but I am glad that I managed to make time for a walk in nature and to nourish my soul by visiting a special place full of emotion and faith.
In today's blog we will go to the village of Sebis in Bihor county where we will visit a very old orthodox church.
I'm a hunter of places like this, I love to discover their history, to find out who laid the foundation stone, which priests served there and especially the legends of the place.
I found in a few villages in Bihor county a few places of worship with a very old and from what I found I chose this one (I honestly don't know what made me choose it), but don't worry, I have also noted the others on the list so that at some point it will be their turn.
After about two and a half hours of driving we arrived at the entrance to the village of Sebis, where this church and cemetery, as well as a much newer church, are located.
The exact year of construction of the church is not known exactly, it seems that the church was built on the site of an older church, from what I have read the construction of the church would have been done somewhere between 1756-1764.
I leave below some information that I found on the internet about the church, I hope you like the history of this place.
The present building was erected, according to some documentary evidence, between 1756-1764, but the exact year of construction is not known, on the site of another older church that documents of the time mention in 1724. In a document from 1956 it is said about the place of worship that "the ancestors built the church". It seems, however, that there was an even older church in Sebiș, since the documents mention the 43-year-old priest Ilisie, who served here with his four sons, somewhere around 1700. In a recent conversation with the parish priest of Sebiș, he stated that samples of the wood of the building were taken and sent to laboratories in Western Europe in order to establish the exact date of the building of the church.
Evidence of the different phases of construction is preserved on the interior walls of the place of worship. On the imperial door on the left, at the entrance to the altar, is inscribed a text that speaks about the year in which the interior painting was made and its author: "This church was painted by David from Wallachia, from the town of Curtea de Argeș, being a painter in Sichitealec. Pomelnic a lui Popa Vasile 1764"
In the middle of the 18th century, in the church of Sebiș village prayed, both the inhabitants of the village and those from the neighboring villages of Belejeni and Țigănești.
The church built between 1756-1764 is 13 meters long, the pentagonal apse of the altar, 3 meters long, is added to the total length. The width of the church measures 6 meters and the total height of the building reached 30 meters. The church is ornamented with a beautifully carved wooden belfry, which seems to hold the church together. The wooden church in Sebiș is the only place of worship in Bihor that preserves, almost intact, the original interior painting, dated 1764, made by David Zugravul, under the guidance of priests Vasile and Filimon Lupu, covered by a layer of smoke, due to the long time the church was heated with a wood stove.
The interior of the church preserves valuable objects, old icons on wood and glass, old wooden furniture, and the foot of the altar table is made of a stalactite. Of great artistic and historical value is also one of the church bells, which bears an inscription saying that it was cast in 1791 for the village of Sebiș.
It is absolutely amazing, unfortunately I didn't have access to the inside but I found a window without glass and I put my cell phone through there and I took some pictures, the same acces to the churchyard is free.
Let's take a look inside through the window.
You can still see the paintings on the wooden walls of the church.
My dear visitors I have reached the final point of my blog today I hope that the wooden church of Sebiș has managed to arouse your curiosity and desire to see it in pictures.
THE END!
