Greetings, friends! I hope you are having a great weekend. We are already ending the month of March and I don't know if for you, but for me, this month has gone by very fast.
At the beginning of March, during Carnival week, I had the opportunity to take a ride with my boyfriend and his family. Since then, I have wanted to share this experience with you, but had not found the time to do so. Although several weeks have passed, I would like to tell you about this beautiful trip we made to Caracas to visit the National Art Gallery.
That day we visited several places, which I will tell you about in another post. However, today I want to focus on this beautiful site, full of art and history and that transmitted a very special energy to me.
The National Art Gallery (GAN), located between the Candelaria and San Agustín parishes in the so-called cultural circuit of Caracas, in front of the Central Park Towers, is the art museum where more than 9,000 works that are part of our artistic and cultural heritage are preserved. The exhibited works cover more than four centuries of history of the national plastic expression, since we can observe different genres and tendencies that include painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, among others.

Upon entering the National Art Gallery (GAN), we began our tour in room 1, seeing the exhibition of rag dolls called: Zobeyda Jimenez Dolls Party 2025, in honor of the dancer of burriquitas, writer and culturist Elpidio Boullon, as well as Zobeyda Jimenez.

This exhibition features more than 60 rag dolls handcrafted by different artisans from all over the country. This exhibition highlights our traditions and everything that is part of our idiosyncrasy. This exhibition reminded me of my grandmother Olimpia, since she loved to make these dolls and I still have one that she made for me with great affection.

It is very interesting that our country's artists have the recognition they deserve for the hard work they do every day to keep our traditions intact and transmit that knowledge from generation to generation. Upon entering this exhibition, I also remembered Armando Reverón, who was a Venezuelan painter, draftsman and sculptor, recognized not only for his artistic works, but also for adoring his rag dolls.

Then, we continue our visit passing to the central corridor, where they also show different paintings, photographs and drawings of different Venezuelan artists. At the end of this corridor, we can see a space dedicated to children and their works created with love, where they express their ideas through beautiful mandalas and colorful paintings.

We continued our tour through one of the halls that was open that day, since the exhibits are always changing. In this hall, we saw different artistic pieces ranging from pre-Hispanic times, to sculptures and modern works of art.

One of the works that filled me with great pride and made my heart so happy was the piece by Tito Salas in honor of our Liberator Simón Bolívar. This work called Simón Bolívar equestrian, was made in 1936. Here we see how the artist highlights in a phenomenal way the features of this character so important for the history of America. In addition, we can see how meticulous he was in painting every detail of the horse and also in representing every element of the Liberator's costume and the setting. Tito Salas, was a renowned Venezuelan painter who stood out for capturing the history of Venezuela through his paintings, several of his works are in the National Pantheon, the Miraflores Palace and the Central Bank of Caracas.

Another of the works that without a doubt I loved, not only because the historical character is one of my favorite heroes, but because I consider it one of the most emblematic in our country, is the one made by Arturo Michelena, entitled: Miranda in La Carraca, made in 1896, in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the death of Francisco de Miranda.
In this painting, we see the portrait of Francisco de Miranda, precursor of the South American independence and creator of our national flag, who was imprisoned by the Spaniards in the Penal de las Cuatro Torres of the Carraca arsenal, in Cadiz, where he remained from 1814 until his death on July 14, 1816. In spite of showing a defeated man, we see the integrity, honor and dignity of this character, who is also known for being one of the most cultured of his time, a detail that Arturo Michelena shows in this work by painting on a small table the books that he always carried with him.

Another work that caused me curiosity is also made by Arturo Michelena, called: Carlota Corday Camino al Cadalso and is a story based on real life.
This piece is inspired by a historical event that occurred in France, the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat, a prominent political leader of the French Revolution, who dies at the hands of Carlota Corday. Here, the author of the play shows us Carlota, who at that moment is going to face the end of her life, condemned for having assassinated Marat. Corday stabbed Marat in his bathtub. He had a skin condition that prevented him from getting out of a tub of hot water. As an act of protest against the political situation of the time, he decides to end this man's life. As far as I read, this woman's intention was to sacrifice both lives in order to save hundreds of lives.

The idea of going to these places is to be able to investigate the works that catch our attention and thus be able to learn and, above all, appreciate even more what is in this gallery, since it represents a unique and incomparable cultural heritage.
One of the many things I loved about the gallery is the diversity of its spaces, each with a unique character. There is always a guide available to provide you with the information you want. In addition, they make sure that the necessary rules are followed to preserve the works during your visit to the GAN. I was also impressed with the variety of sculptures on display at the time, representing both contemporary and modern art. Likewise, there are works in which embroidery is integrated as part of the technique used in the creation of the paintings.

To conclude our tour of the GAN, we visited the exhibition dedicated to the Caracas Municipal Symphony Orchestra, in honor of its 45 years of filling the city with music. Upon arriving at this part of the hall, I could not hold back my tears; I cried with happiness upon seeing this beautiful space dedicated to the Orchestra. Photographs of its history and brochures from 1992 to the present are on display. However, what really moved me was listening to the Venezuelan waltzes and our music in general, which highlights our roots and the fusion of the Caribbean.

It was a magical tour, full of art, culture and history that, without a doubt, I recommend everyone to do it. The experience is wonderful and has a special value for me, as it left me with a deep emotion to see that our traditions endure and that no one can erase what identifies us as Venezuelans. It was gratifying to observe the recognition of various artists of our country, something that we are often not aware of.
We ended our visit to the GAN by having a delicious coffee and chatting about how nice the tour was.

I am happy to share with you this experience and soon I will bring you another of the places we visited that day in the city of Caracas. See you in a future post.
