A 16-kilometer journey from the center of the town of Lhokseumawe took me to a comfortable local natural tourist spot. The trip with Google Maps was estimated to take 30 minutes by car, but it turned out longer because half of it was through unpaved village roads. Passing through the lovely village atmosphere was a pleasure in itself, and before I knew it, 50 minutes had passed and I arrived at Lhok Seulayang.
Traveling by motorbike might be faster. This community-managed spot lacks a designated parking area. However, visitors can park four-wheeled vehicles along the shoulder of the road, next to the community fence and there is no parking fee. This isn't a problem, as locals are friendly.
Lhok Seulayang is located in Lhok Jok village, Kuta Makmur sub-district, North Aceh Regency. This refreshing natural river offers a tranquil escape. While such scenery is common in Aceh, Lhok Seulayang is special because the local community appreciates its tourism potential. They provide simple huts and snacks for visitors wanting to relax and unwind from the city's noise.
As soon as I got out of the car, I immediately felt the aura of peace and the freshness of the natural air. There was no noise of vehicle engines calling each other, only the occasional motorbike of residents passing by.
I had to walk about 150 meters from the parking lot to reach the huts on the riverbank. Walking along the clay-floored footpaths will be very slippery during the rainy season. So, I suggest not to come during the rainy season, unless you want to slide :).
I made this trip on January 27, 2025, and the atmosphere was not too crowded. There were only a few people seen swimming in the river. According to the hut owner, Sundays are the busiest day.
The width of the river in Lhok Seulayang varies between 6 and 10 meters. Some parts of the water flow are naturally dammed by large rocks, creating ideal spots for bathing. In the middle of the river, used car tires are hung tied to large trees, providing fun swings for visitors.
I ordered a cup of coffee and enjoyed it while sitting on the rocks by the river. The calm and serene setting made me feel incredibly relaxed.
To be honest, my main goal in coming to Lhok Seulayang was to take long-exposure photographs that give a soft, flowing look to the water tumbling over the rocks. This spot is the most accessible and closest option available. I showed all the long-exposure photographs that I had successfully captured. I'm thrilled to share this with you. I hope you enjoy experiencing the beauty of this place through my lens. Taken with Sony Alpha 7 III camera + Sony FE 50mm F1.8 lens + E-Mount Metabones adapter.
Lhok Seulayang is the perfect place for anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the beauty of unspoiled nature. Although access to this location is not very easy, it will be fully rewarded by the tranquility offered by Lhok Seulayang.
