Our third stop of our Catlins adventures while we were exploring the wonderful Catlins on the south island of New Zealand.
The Catlins is such a beautiful stretch of the coast line in southern New Zealand between Balclutha and Invercargill. One side you have stunning beaches and coastline and on the other is dense rainforest with breath taking waterfalls.
So let's continue with our adventure and share with you some photos from McLean Falls.
McLean Falls is around a 40min return hike through beautiful lush rainforest.
Now if you love beautiful waterfalls this is the hike for you!!
A smooth well maintained concrete walking train will guide you through the forest, with a couple of steps along the way.
The sound of the native birds whistle as you make your way to the falls
Over bridges
Past some amazing waterfalls that flow along the Tautuku River.
It's always fun trying out some long exposure photos with flowing water
At one point there is a stunning mossy overhang surrounded by ferns
Until you arrive at the breath taking McLean Falls.
McLean Falls plunges 22meter high into a pool then cascades further down, this waterfall is surrounded by mossy green rocks which gives it a fell like it's from the movie land before time.
McLean Falls are definitely the most spectacular waterfalls in the Caitlin's.
Story has it that these falls were named by the early settler, Doug McLean, who used to bathe in it from time to time.
Why did Doug McLean name the waterfall after himself?
Because after all those baths, it was the only way to make sure he stayed McLean!
Sorry about the bad joke haha.
Definitely add McLean falls to your itinerary when visiting the Catlins.
Stay tuned for my next post about our trip through the Catlin
Happy travels
