World's Largest Lily Pads

Dear friends, our adventure through Thailand continues. Today, we leave the stunning island of Koh Samui and head to Phuket. I have travelled to close to 100 countries and have been through countless airports, and the Koh Samui airport has to be one of the most unique on earth. The entire airport feels like a tropical resort.

The walkways are undercover but still give off that resort vibe. There are cafes, shops, swings, bean bag chairs, and a lovely lily pad pond. I love the outdoor vibe; it is so relaxing, which is the opposite vibe to most airports.

The airport team was warm and inviting. It was undoubtedly the most relaxing service experience, with no lines and staff available when needed, yet never overbearing. I did question a stork I saw at the lily pad pond if he went through security. But in all seriousness, what a unique, relaxed airport experience.

We sat at our gate and enjoyed the most delicious Thai iced tea before a tram car came and picked us up. We enjoyed the cool breeze as we were driven to our small plane. The view flying from Koh Samui to Phuket was absolutely stunning. We flew with Bangkok Airways, and even though the flight was just under an hour long, we were served a full breakfast, which was delightfully surprising. Thai service and hospitality never ceases to amaze me.

After the short flight, we arrived in Phuket. We went straight out of the airport and into a Grab (it's similar to Uber). While in Thailand, we used the transport apps Grab and Bolt to get around. They were affordable and reliable. One thing we learnt about Thailand is that they have so many stunning cafes that are way more than just cafes. I work as the Director of Operations for a travel app called Tripio, so I had thoroughly researched Thailand. It was during my research that I found this wonderful cafe. They are home to one of the world's largest lily pad species and, for a very small fee, offer the most incredible drone photoshoots.

Arriving at Ma Doo Bua Cafe in Phuket

Ma Doo Bua is a cafe, so they offer some delicious food and drink. However, we were full from our plane breakfast, believe it or not, and were headed to Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort right after, so we knew we would be having a big meal there. Due to this, we chose to have a couple of drinks; you already know I got a coconut.

While we were waiting for our photoshoot spot, we enjoyed the stunning scenery, some people-watching, and took some of our own photos on the nets. The drone photoshoots are first come, first served, so to avoid disappointment, I suggest arriving as the cafe opens, as they do not take bookings. Being that it is drone photography, bear in mind that the drones cannot fly in the rain, so factor that into your planning.

Within just 30 minutes, it was time for our much-anticipated drone photoshoot. We arrived right as it opened, ensuring prompt service. For the shoot, we decided on both solo shots and together shots, carefully coordinating our outfits. I chose a long dress with a high slit to add some contrast, balancing it against the long boat’s wooden texture. As a throwback to my earlier blog in this travel series about Pig Island, I’ll mention that this was the second hat I lost during this trip—yes, you read that right, I lost three hats in total! But I ended up with my dream hat in the end and still have it. So it's not so bad.

The photographers were fantastic; they guided us every step of the way and expertly positioned us for the most flattering shots. They make you feel very comfortable. Although they also offer video packages, we decided to stick with photography. The session took place on traditional wooden long-tail boats, gracefully stationed on a stunning artificial lake adorned with one of the world's largest lily pad species. These incredible lily pads belong to the Victoria amazonica species, which are the superstars of the Nymphaeaceae family. They truly created an unforgettable backdrop. I cherish these photographs and am so glad I chose to capture this moment.

Ma Doo Bua also offers accommodation and massages, letting you fully unwind and immerse yourself in the serene environment. Although we wished we could have stayed longer, it was time to move on to our next adventure.
