Our Wintersports 2025 has been awesome

in Worldmappin10 days ago

We returned yesterday from a wonderful week of winter sports. We went to Neukirchen in Austria with our boys and their girlfriends. My brother also went for 4 days with his wife, and stayed with us in our appartment.

This is now the 4th time that we have been to Neukirchen and we have already booked for next year, it is such a nice and beautiful area with (for us) enough variation in ski slopes.

The first two years we are in Domizil Brugger , The first year it was absolutely fantastic there but the second year it was so disappointing that we decided not to go there anymore. It seemed then as if the owner had had enough of it all, and that was evident because the following year he handed it over to his son.

My wife had found another destination last year. This was Alpenchalet Neukirchen.

Last year was the first time we were there, my wife said it was close to the gondola, when we arrived I had to laugh because it was really 30 meters from the gondola, that close was really brilliant. In the morning you put on your ski boots, a short walk and you were in the gondola. So we agreed, this year we went there again.

Below is a small impression of the apartment where we stayed, it was an 8 person apartment with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a balcony and two toilets. The decor was typically Austrian and everything was well taken care of. The complex also had a cinema where you could watch Netflix, if you wanted to, we didn't use it :). We did use the sauna, they had a nice wellness area with 4 saunas, a relaxation area and a cold shower. Lovely after skiing.

Neukirchen

Neukirchen is part of the ski area Wildkögel Arena.
That is a ski area that also includes Bramberg, not far from Kitzbuhel. There are enough slopes for beginners or advanced skiers, so you can have a great time there. In Neukirchen there is one gondola that takes you up, on the way you can get off at the middle station, but that is more for hikers or, if you want to make a trip down in the afternoon, for skiers.

The village has a cozy main street with hotels and restaurants and weekly activities and (of course) the necessary apres-ski bars. Our favorites were:

Fichtenrand

This bar is located on a rise along the valley descent. So everyone who does the valley descent passes by there. Very nice to see. Although the snow in the valley was not optimal this year, there were enough people who came down. A specialty, at least we think haha, in this bar is the "Bauern Tequilla". That is a tequila shot with a slice of raw ham and a horseradish mixture. You first have to drink the Tequilla in one gulp and then the ham immediately afterwards. Delicious.

Every Thursday a band plays here that (of course) plays the biggest apres-ski hits. Very cozy!

Ramba Zambar

image.png
The Ramba Zambar is an après-ski / lunch cafe on top of the slope. When you come out of the gondola, the bar is directly on the right. We have been coming here for 4 years and have a drink or coffee here when we go up with the gondola in the morning and of course lunch in the afternoon. The owner has a farm himself and the meat that is served here comes from his own cows. And you can taste that too, delicious burgers. This year we have been here every day, just a beer in between or a nice meal. The service is also very friendly, every now and then they come with a schnapps "Ramba Zambar". A mix of vodka, cherry liqueur and manga liqueur. Very tasty but dangerous ;)

We had a nice bond with the waiter, when the rest was skiing and I was still drinking a beer he came to sit with us and have a chat. He himself came from Slovakia and had been in Austria for 9 years. Nice guy.

At one point he came to us and we all got a "Ramba Zambar" hat. Which we put on immediately of course. Nice gesture.

The view from the terrace was also great, you looked right into the valley. We were also very lucky with the weather, we had full sun all week but it was freezing up there. So perfect weather for skiing and having fun.

Schirmbar at the Gondola

Next to the gondola there is also a so-called schirmbar. The bar doesn't have a real name I believe, but here was also apre-ski every day from 15:30. There was live music here on Tuesday and we had already discussed in the morning that we would all go there. So after skiing we went to the apartment, put on comfortable shoes, and went to the apre-ski.

Of course, après-ski also includes the necessary ski-specific drinks such as the Jäger-Bombs, the flügel shots, and we had plenty of those :)

Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of the band, this was a duo. A guitarist/keyboardist and a drummer (on an electric drum kit). The drummer was great, not so much because of his drumming (which was good) but that man was so funny, with every song he did something that made everyone laugh out loud. He really made the atmosphere.

Novum Restaurant

Last year we ate at Novum a few times, during the day it is a bakery and in the evening it is a full-fledged restaurant. The price-quality is really amazing. They have a nice menu with various local dishes but also pizzas and pasta. We liked it so much last year that we ate here every day during this holiday :) They were very happy with that but of course we were too, we were assured of good food in a nice environment.

My boys don't really like having their picture taken, so whenever I want to take a picture of the three of us, they always have to pull funny faces :) But hey, I do have a picture!!

Unfortunately not everything went well during skiing, we kept it up for a long time to come back without injuries but now unfortunately my wife had to believe it. During ski lessons she made a turn and lost control causing her to fall (not hard). Unfortunately her left knee went in a different direction than her ski causing her knee ligaments to be sprained. Very annoying and especially painful, that happened on Wednesday so she had to stop a few days earlier.

But apart from that we had a great holiday with the necessary shot drinks ;)

A day of skiing is quite tiring and strenuous. I often come off the slopes sweaty and then go and relax on the balcony. As you can see in the picture, my hair also goes wild :P

image.png

As I mentioned earlier, the weather was beautiful, the sun all day. This did mean that there was little to no snow in the valley, except on fields and areas that were not in the sun. That makes it even more special that when you go up with the gondola, you are suddenly in the middle of the white world.

image.png

The slopes were beautiful, freshly prepared in the morning and in the afternoon it became more powder snow, but absolutely no slush so great skiing. My oldest son and his girlfriend snowboarded while my wife, my youngest son and his girlfriend and I all skied.

Finally a clip filmed by my son. First I come down like a 'skilled skier' and then his girlfriend who comes down the hill very smoothly.

We enjoyed it immensely and have already booked for next year, but it will take a while ;) .....

Have a nice evening,

Peter

Sort:

I'm jealous. It's a few years since I went skiing and I miss it. Looks like a nice place and it's always good to be close to the lifts as walking in ski boots is no fun.

!BEER

It's so much fun (as you know). But indeed walking with skiboots is hell :)

Wow, that looks like it was a really awesome time. I am glad you found this place and it is better than some of the other trips you have had. I hope that maybe one day I can make it over to Austria. It looks like an amazing place.

Let me know when you're heading for Austria, will come and have a beer with you ;)

Will do! It's going to be a bit!
