I visited the Kovan kaya area with my friends while we were staying in the small mountain town of Madjarovo, located in southern Bulgaria.
Extremely beautiful rock formations can be observed in this place.
Rocks and screes of bizarre shapes and impressive sizes tower up high.
Looking at the valley, you are breathless from the beautiful meanders of the Arda River. You can see animals bathing in its waters from above.
At the site of this impressive sight there is an observation bench and many signs with positive messages by an unknown author.
"If someone says something is impossible, someone else is probably already doing it. So look at the mountain, leave the safe and catch the wind. Explore, dream, discover Madjarovo."
From the information boards I learn that Kovan Kaya has been declared a Natural Landmark for the purpose of protecting rare and protected species of birds.
The impressive site is home to a large number of rock-loving birds such as rock swallow, rock grouse, rock mason.
The last pair of griffon vultures in Bulgaria was discovered here in the 1980s. In this way, the beginning of the recovery of the species in this area around the river Arda is set.
According to data from Green Balkans:
Тhe national population of the griffon vulture in 2024 exceeds the psychological limit of 200 pairs and is already in the range of 202-209 pairs.
In addition to griffon vultures, black and Egyptian vultures can also be observed around Madjarovo.
In the air around the rocks we could see some of them circling, but we had no binoculars to see them better.
Since the breeding ability of vultures is very low, their conservation is very important. They are nature's janitors. It is important to preserve them.

The Positive message along with such a Rocky view, indeed has changed the look I have on South Bulgaria now. Even the river looks so clean and inviting, the mind just wanders when u sit on the bench and admire the view in between such greenery and mountains that are so picturesque.
