With Christmas celebrations behind us and the weather finally clearing, my family and I decided it was time to stretch our legs and enjoy some fresh Welsh air. Living out in the countryside, away from the commotion of city life, we’re fortunate to have stunning landscapes right on our doorstep. A short five-minute drive brought us to "The Smilog," a beautiful forestry area steeped in history and natural charm.

Our destination for the day was an old drovers' trail, a remnant of Wales’ rich agricultural past. These trails were once bustling with drovers leading livestock to market towns, and though industrialisation eventually ended their necessity, the paths remain—a testament to the enduring connection between land and livelihood. Today, these routes serve as peaceful walking trails, winding through the hilly landscape and offering breathtaking views.

Our journey began with a steady climb toward "Cariad Rock," a local landmark perched atop the hill, some 800 feet up. This rocky outcrop, known in English as "Lovers Rock," features a mysterious carving whose origins are unknown but has been a cherished part of local lore for centuries. The kids were eager to explore, their excitement growing with every step as they searched for creepy crawlies and admired the natural surroundings.

The trail treated us to glimpses of wildlife, including cheerful robins and vibrant great tits. Along the way, we also encountered grazing sheep and a few cows, adding a touch of rural charm to our walk. After making good time to the summit, we paused at Cariad Rock to take in the stunning view, snap a few photos, and share a well-earned drink.

Though we would have loved to linger longer, the approaching clouds and fading daylight reminded us to start our descent. The journey back was just as delightful, with the kids happily muddy from their outdoor adventure and already recounting their favorite moments.

In total, we walked about 6 miles, soaked up some much-needed fresh air, and created memories that we’ll cherish for a long time. Days like this remind me how lucky we are to live in such a picturesque part of the world, where history and nature intertwine so beautifully.
