Japanese hospitality is next level in Tendo Onsen Hotel. Of all the ryokans I've stayed in Japan, this is the best for me. Even when we stayed only for 1 night, I felt like a princess because of the quality service this hotel offered.
Tendo Onsen Hotel is found in the small and quiet town of Tendo City in Yamagata Prefecture. We booked our accommodation here after learning about the tour package for our Ginzan Onsen trip.
The hotel is a 15-minute walk from Tendo Station, but more or less 30 minutes when there's snow.
When we arrived, a van from the hotel picked us up at the train station. We took the bullet train to Tendo from Tokyo. We actually came earlier than the check-in time but they still picked us up and accommodated us in the hotel. They allowed us to leave our bags while we explored the town.
Room
We got back to the hotel around 2 pm. We thought we had to wait for an hour for the official check in time but they led us to our room immediately.
Our room was on the 8th floor and the ambiance of the hallway is just amazing. There was a vending machine on the other end. There were seats in a zen-like area where you could just chill if you don't wanna stay in your room. Near the elevator, there were yukatas available in different sizes if the ones in the room don't fit.
You can even see the town from this elevator area!
Our room was enough for us. It’s actually so spacious. Our bags were already in the room, we just had to show up. The hotel staff was so nice he led us in the room, explained a few stuff and bowed then bid his farewell. That was plus points for me.
Lobby
We made ourselves home. There was tea and snacks prepared for us but we got coupons to be used in the hotel so we went back to the lobby and had a quick sip of coffee. This was our original plan if we weren’t led to the room. I had juice though. 😅
The cafe/waiting area in the lobby had a nice view of the mini waterfalls, plus it’s snowing!
Some parts have turned to ice. Isn't that amazing?
I found these gems while looking around the lobby. These are the shogi pieces that Tendo is proud of. Plus, some meijin-sen matches were held in this hotel. I don't know much about shogi but I know meijin match games are something passionate people look forward to watching. After all, having the meijin title is something extraordinary - it's the most prestigious title as Wikipedia says. I've only known about meijin matches in karuta, but for sure, it's as intense as shogi. I should probably watch an anime about shogi. 😅
Dinner
During dinner, we were led to a private room on their restaurant floor.
We were so thrilled seeing our private dining room. Actually, we didn't know it would be private because of all the ryokans we've been to, we usually eat in their dining hall together with everyone or in our room. We didn't know this room was prepared for us here. Plus, the view was just so amazing! This is really perfect for couples!
Our dinner was a Japanese course meal. To be honest, I have no idea of most of the foods I ate but they were all good.
My favorite sashimi was so fresh! I finished it right away. LOL
The fish was surprisingly good. It complemented well with the radish.
Sukiyaki was cooked in this small pan in front of us and it was also so good!
We were so full but wait, there's more. There was a chinese noodle dish and rice served. We usually serve rice together with everything else but here, rice is served almost at the end. Miso soup was served before dessert.
Who wouldn't be full after this complete meal?
Onsen
After dinner, I went to the onsen. It's located on the basement floor. There were shampoos in many brands available just before you enter the onsen. The changing room was so spacious but I couldn't find the lotion, etc there. There was an indoor onsen and an open-air onsen that had the view of the waterfalls seen from the lobby earlier. Don't worry, even when you're naked in the open-air onsen, no one will see you. I spent most of my time in the open-air onsen because of the view. When it got too hot, I would get up and sit on the bench then dip again.
There was a sauna too but I haven't tried sauna before and I went alone to the onsen so I didn't know what to do so I ended up not entering the sauna room.
No photos of me naked. Sorry guys and gals. 😜
And of course, no photos of other people naked too! 😛
You can check out how the onsen looks like in their website.
Nighttime
While we were having our dinner, they prepared our futons in our room so when we came back, everything was all set to sleep. We slept late though, around 2 AM because we were talking and drinking.
Breakfast
Breakfast was buffet style and it didn't look like a restaurant but rather a conference room. There were so many to choose from.
We realized we were the only foreigners in the hotel. Everybody else was Japanese. 😅 Maybe they were wondering how and why we came to Tendo LOL
So many people were falling in line to get the steak but not the grilled mochi. Got both and were great.
I wasn't plan on eating rice but when I saw the eggs, I changed my mind. I love TKG, which stands for Tamago Kake Gohan - which means raw egg on top of rice mixed with soy sauce. I didn't put a lot of soy sauce in mind though.
Halfway through eating what I got on my plate, I was already so full but I had to finish this. 😅
Checkout
After breakfast, some of us went to the onsen for a very quick last dip. I stayed in the room though, enjoying the view and packing my stuff, also last-minute lying down. 😅
In the 1st floor of the hotel, there was a souvenir shop. We didn't go inside though because it's time to checkout.
The same van that fetched us from the train station took us back there.
It was really a satisfying and relaxing experience at Tendo Hotel. It was my friend's 2nd time in a ryokan, and he's already so hooked on it. He said when he comes back for a vacation, he'll stay in a ryokan again. It's just expensive to stay in a ryokan for many days but that's why we're working hard smart to experience this superb treatment even for a day or two. 😉
Til next ryokan experience!
Thanks for reading!
See you around! じゃあ、またね!

The private dining room got me! Everything's superb!
Now I wonder how much it is to stay there?
I bookmarked this for future reference. I'd love to experience it myself din someday.
That egg reminds me of gudetama! HAHAHA
It's really something one must try when in Japan. There are tons of ryokans here too, this is just probably pricey but the experience is something worth it. I think we paid 75k yen or 30k php for our plan. There were 4 of us, and one guy had to pay half the amount, the rest we split by 3. 😂
There were other plans too, without dinner or without breakfast and there are room options too. Usually it can get cheaper or expensive depending on your choice.
Hahahaha! Gudetamaaaaaa cutie
Thanks sa pagconvert, witty! Hahahaha
Uy pwede na yung 30k php for 4, ambagan naman pala and half of it's paid na by your friend.
Oo syempre, mahirap na panahon ngayon e hahahaha
Ay ang ganda ng place ate witty! Dream ko din yung makaranas ng Snow. 🤧 Sana makapunta/experience ko din yan.
Hope you can in the future jam!
Woow, Tendo Hotel was great! It's big and quality.
It is! Would be glad to stay here again
When I go to Japan, one-day (hopefully) visiting Fugaku v2 for example I am imaging... Can we meet? Would be super cool... And I might need some help with "Japanese" !LOL
There is not need for promises... =) just a thought.
If we're near and I have no plans, of course, we can meet! 😂
Nah, I think you won't need help with "Japanese" 😁

Wow what a fun moments for you , the hotel look so amazing , how much do they charge per night ??
It's truly a great experience staying in this hotel.
The plan we got was I think around 75,000 yen (550 USD), with dinner and breakfast.
I think there are other plans too without dinner or breakfast so it's cheaper.
We booked this hotel on the same month as we stayed so it's kinda expensive.
Hope you used Travala - best crypto booking company.
Thanks for the tip!
I’ll try to see if I can use it next time.
summer is much better and a lot friendlier with the immune system and body in general
I prefer cold seasons than summer 😅
I’m so used to summer all year long in my hometown so living in a country where there are 4 seasons is something I like, and realized I love cold seasons than hot.
The hot spring (onsen) keeps the body warm and has great benefits.
this place is very exquisite. me likey.
wow new word coming from you hahaha
😆
Uwaaa~ This is a vacay! I like the combination of a little of everything in your breakfast, Witty. 😊 For sure you guys had fun and stuffed. !PIZZA
We were so full! We had fun, especially with the view and the onsen~
Firstly the place is looking so beautiful that I wish to visit that place one day.
Besides, the places looking quiet which mean that you enjoyed there very well.
And lastly, Those food photographs are looking very delicious.
It was quiet indeed. You could relax here without having to worry about anything.
wow i would love to also experience this princess-like treatment.. service sure is superb!!! was the dinner included in the hotel room booking or it was paid separately?
The dinner and breakfast were included in our plan so we didn't pay for anything else.
I think there are plans that don't include dinner or breakfast, so it becomes cheaper.
oh i see.. how much sis?
For our plan, it was around 75k yen or 30k pesos for the 4 of us.
wow... it's expensive d ay jud hehe
I can feel you when you say that you felt like a princess staying in this hotel because it does feel next level from what I've seen myself too! Love the little chairs in your room, as well as the waterfalls from outside. Really lovely!
IKR! These chairs are always present in Japanese-style hotels I've been to. They encourage guests to have like a mini "afternoon tea" party in the room, so they provide tea and snacks.
It seems it was a yummy Tendon Hotel experience! Many different kinds of food on the table. Makes my mouth water😋!
It was! The meal was just so perfect!
sana all nalang jud akong maingon ani ay.. huhuhu sarap siguro sa feeling na hatid sundo ng van feeling vip char.. the yukata is so soft looking, must be nice wearing that yukata 😍 and the food looks so delicious!!! im hungry tuloy

The yukata was so nice! It’s comfortable. Was so worried they only have few sizes available but there were a lot. Feeling VIP yesss! Meyemen yern

It would be great if you could visit even once
Wow what a view. I love the dinner by courses so fancy. Beautiful
Thank you! It's definitely something to look forward to when staying in a place like this.
I've been wanting to visit Japan for such a long time. I must say that it's a number one on my travel bucket list. I would love to experience the Japanese hospitality first hand 🙂
This hotel looks nice and cozy 🙂
Thank you for sharing!
You should definitely experience it when you come to visit!
The services in other hotels are great too.
Omg this place looks so cool and lovely, the decor are mind blowing
It is!
Looked like a nice place. I hope we will also have fun and a good time on our visit in April.
You'll surely have a good time!
That onsen hotel looks great. I've stayed in many cheaper places in Japan and they're usually a little run down, but your hotel looks so clean and new!
I'm kinda surprised actually. Some ryokans I've stayed too are rundown, true. The hotel has been here for a long time I think, maybe they maintained it well.
Yung snow nla npansin ko 🥰 dami pa foods..
They have a brush to sweep away the snow you have in your clothes or belongings before entering the hotel. 😂
Lugar pa lang mahal na tan awn. Hehe
It was indeed impressive. The food and the place were perfect. ☺️ curious lang ko pila kaha na diha? Hehe
Impressive place indeed, impressive amount too LOL
I think we paid around 75000 yen or 30,000 pesos for 4 of us. I think there are cheaper plans, those without breakfast or dinner I guess. Nagbook kasi kami on the same month na so medj mahal na yun.
Worth it naman ang price. Napakaganda ng place. ☺️
Grabe sa food talaga ako nag F👀cus! Ang sasarap @wittyzell 🤤
!PIZZA
Nakuuu gutom ka lang chichi hhahahaha
