How good is life when you can go ice skating right here, on a frozen lake between the mountains? One of the unique activities you can experience in Austria beside the many other winter sports. This lake is called Piburger See, and is located in Piburg, Otztal. It isn't the snowiest place around Austria, when we were just minutes away we barely believed that the lake would be frozen. It was not even freezing outside. But luckily it was frozen, and skatable.
I came here together with my friends, who traveled from Holland to Austria to visit me and to experience the real winter in the Austrian Alps. Since Ilona loves Ice Skating, we picked this place to explore, and of course, to go ice skating!
My friends, Merel Eva and Ilona :)
Frozen Waters are a rare sight in Holland, and the only time the canals were frozen in the last maybe 8 years, I wasn't in Holland and I missed it. I totally forgot how to do the ice skating, I did not expect it would be so hard! It was so easy when I was a child! But luckily there were this little Penguins to guide my friend Merel and me. Ilona and Eva were fine without. This tools are actually made for little kids, but they helped us not to fall down for the first round. After a round I felt confident enough to go on my own. Not so stable and balanced, but at least I didn't fall down.
Meet my Pinguin 🐧 Which was also useful to hold my camera bag and gloves
Focussing hard to not fall down
I was fine after a round of practice with my penguin. Not that stable, but I didn't fall down. Ice skating tip: Don't put your phone in your pocket like this, if you fall, it breaks. It happened to Ilona a couple of years ago
The cold air makes my cheeks turn red
I made an attempt to get a shot of the 4 of us. It might not be perfect but hey, we got a group photo at least
I guess they have here a swimming pool in summer
We wanted to make a picture of the 4 of us, so I decided to put my camera in the snow to make a selfie, Kinda hard to do without a camera man and the shot isn't great, but it is a memory which is great, and captured here on the Hive Blockchain forever.
Group pictures, the ice melts away a bit on daytime, but the layer seems to freeze right after the sun disappears, and seems to be at least 20 cm, maybe even double
Kazespatzle, the food my friends ordered to try some Austrian cuisine. It is a kind of pasta like texture with Austrian Cheese, topped with fried unions. People here love to eat it after or during a break of winter sports
Next Stop: The River
We asked the waiter in the restaurant where to go for a walk in the area, and he advised us to drive down the road to Oetz, just 5 minutes away from the lake, to walk along the river to a famous bridge, the Wellerbrucke. So that's what we decided to do.
A viewpoint over the river
The flowing water looks very clear and clean. At first I didn't expect the water to flow so fast, but it looked beautiful. A great environment to get some fresh air and daily exercise. The walk isn't that long, just 30 minutes but perfect to combine with a trip to the lake.
This flowing river is just minutes away from the frozen lake. It does not even look like winter here!
Along the river, you can find plenty of big rocks which allow you to enjoy the view and the relaxing sounds. It would be a cool place to have a picnic and spend the day.
A little break and enjoying the view on the big rocks
Let's walk along the river
When we arrived at the bridge, I decided to shoot a little video with my action Camera, to show the full surrounding. I am not really sure how to upload it here. That's why I decided to share only two screen shots. Can you believe this 2 pictures below are made with a selfie stick? Pretty cool right? But the video is a thousand times better, I promise you!
The Wellerbrucke, brucke means bridge in German
View the full video here , much better than those 2 screenpictures, I promise!
Video is shot with the Insta360 one x2

Thank you so much for your sweet words! It means a lot to me :)
No problem. I was being sincere. :x:x
It must have been nice to skate on real ice! I only tried once inside a mall's skating rink.
Yes It is! Although artificial ice is usually smoother and easier, skating in nature stays the best!
