Hello, traveller community.

A fortress rises from the northernmost position of the Bay of Havana, Cuba. I am referring to the Fortress of San Carlos de la Cabaña. If you are in Havana you are almost obliged to make an excursion to this site. Here is a small sample of what is treasured in this fortress which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982.

It is the largest fortress in the Americas with an area of (700 x 240)m2. It was built by the Spaniards between 1763 and 1774 (18th century) in order to defend the city against attacks by pirates and enemies of the time. The thick walls and cannons, which today are preserved in museum form, tell a lot of history.

The entire installation has been designed for tourist purposes, attracting hundreds of national and international visitors to enjoy it. Bars, restaurants, shops and the Museum of Fortifications and Weapons are some of the attractions of the place.

The biggest attraction is undoubtedly La hora del Cañonazo. Every day at 9:00pm a cannon is fired over the port of Havana, recalling the curfew when the gates of the city wall were closed (until 1850). It is a beautiful ceremony where young men in uniforms and attire of the time act out the firing of a cannon ball and is heard throughout much of Havana.

Another attraction that brings together people of all ages is the annual International Book Fair held here. Children, young people and adults come to witness the exhibition and sale of books on various subjects, as well as accessories for school and office materials.

The pavilions or barracks where these items are exhibited come alive every year with the attendance of the public in search of a book to take home.

There are also sales points with light food to share the time spent in this place of encounter with history.

Between the past and the present, we stroll through the cobblestones or along the cobbled streets between the stone walls. Cannons are the main theme here. They are to be found on the streets, on every corner and placed on the walls pointing towards the entrance to the bay in a defensive manner.

Cannonballs are also part of the exhibition, further enhancing the defensive atmosphere of this military work. Moats, bastions and ravelins accompany us in this immense expanse of land and the green lawns, as if freshly mowed, are proof of the high level of conservation work carried out here.

A privileged view of the Bay and the other side of the entrance channel to the port of Havana can be had from this point, as it is like a great viewpoint due to its height above sea level.

Boats, the Malecon, the entrance to the Havana Tunnel and the great buildings of the Havana coastline can be seen from the height of this fortress.

History, traditions and culture come together to guarantee a pleasant stay which I extend to you as an invitation to enjoy with family or friends.

Thank you for your reading time.

The fortress is very well preserved. I really liked the pictures you shared with us.

That cannon fire tradition must be something that many visitors expect to hear when visiting the place.

Thank you very much for sharing.

It is a truly magical place. The time of the cannon shot is very awaited and the ceremony is very beautiful. The noise is almost deafening, but then it passes. It is a nice experience to enjoy with friends or family. I am pleased to share with other people what you experience in this fortress, it is a pleasure for them to know part of the heritage that the Cubans treasure. Greetings.
