Today's publication is the final in the cycle of stories about St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg. I have some interesting pictures in my collection, and I will tell you a little more about this amazing temple.
ONLINE REFERENCE: The Cathedral of St. Isaac of Dalmatia, better known as St. Isaac's Cathedral, is one of the main attractions of St. Petersburg. The cathedral is the largest Orthodox church in the Northern capital of Russia. In addition, it is also a state museum-monument, open to all comers. The temple is located on St. Isaac's Square, which belongs to the architectural ensemble of the central squares of St. Petersburg.
A person who first came to the city on the Neva and visited St. Isaac's Cathedral may initially have the wrong impression that the temple has been turned entirely into a museum. This is not quite true. Orthodox church services are held periodically within the walls of the cathedral. Usually, on Great holidays or at a pre-set time for this.
The height of the dome of the cathedral can be judged by the following fact. In one of the recent pictures I captured an image of a dove, which seems to hover in the very center at the highest point under the ceiling of the temple. From below it seems as if the size of the pigeon is about the natural size, but it is not.
In fact, the wingspan of the bird sculpture is about three meters. The vaults themselves and the lighting passing through the dome's flashlight create the illusion that it is lower than it seems. The same applies to those sculptures located around the perimeter inside under the dome itself - they are much larger than they look.
As the guides tell during local excursions, the design of the lifting mechanisms that were built to install the columns of the cathedral was so accurately and carefully calculated and designed that it took very little time to install each of the central columns of the portico. At the same time, there was no crackling, no creaking, no sound at all.
I specially took some detailed pictures of the base of one of the malachite columns. It is clearly visible here that it is all one piece, without joints and seams. Despite the fact that malachite is not completely a gemstone, it is still a very expensive material. Pay attention to the bronze and gilded base of each of the columns. The subtlety and quality of the work of the masters of that time is striking.

СПРАВКА ИЗ СЕТИ: Собор преподобного Исаакия Далматского, более известный как Исаакиевский собор, представляет собой одну из главных достопримечательностей Санкт-Петербурга. Собор является крупнейшим православным храмом Северной столицы России. Кроме того, это также государственный музей-памятник, открытый для посещения всем желающим. Храм находится на Исаакиевской площади, относящейся к архитектурному ансамблю центральных площадей Санкт-Петербурга.
У человека, который впервые приехал в город на Неве и посетил Исаакиевский собор поначалу может сложиться неверное впечатление, будто храм превращён целиком в музей. Это не совсем так. Периодически в стенах собора проходят православные церковные службы. Обычно, по Великим праздникам или в заранее отведённое для этого время.
О том, какой действительно высоты купол собора можно судить по следующему факту. На одном из недавних снимков я запечатлел изображение голубя, который как бы парит в самом центре в самой высокой точке под потолком храма. Снизу кажется, будто размеры голубя примерно в натуральный размер, но это не так.
На самом деле размах крыльев скульптуры птицы около трёх метров. Сами своды и освещение, проходящее через фонарик купола создают иллюзию, будто он ниже, чем кажется. То же самое касается и тех скульптур, расположенных по периметру внутри под самым куполом - они гораздо крупнее, чем выглядят.
Как рассказывают гиды во время здешних экскурсий, конструкция подъёмных механизмов, которые соорудили для установки колонн собора была настолько точно и тщательно просчитаны и сконструированы, что на установку каждой из централных колонн портика уходило крайне мало времени. При этом не было слышно ни треска, ни скрипа, вообще никакого звука.
Я специально сделал несколько детальных снимков основания одной из малахитовых колонн. Здесь хорошо видно, что вся она цельная, без стыков и швов. Невзиая на то, что малахит не является полностью драгоценным камнем, он всё же очень дорогой материал. Обратите внимание и на бронзовое с позолотой основание каждой из колонн. Поражает тонкость и качество работы мастеров того времени.

Это такой невероятный фантастический город, что даже если вы всю жизнь живёте здесь, то крайне маловероятно, что к своим преклонным годам вы сможете осмотреть все достопримечательности этого города.
