Cannes
Cannes was the 9th stop on our Mediterranean Cruise. I had connected with my very first best friend from Primary School because I knew that she was living near Cannes in the Antibes which is only a short 20 minute drive away. So months in advance I gave her the date that we would be in Cannes for our 10 year coffee reunion.
Cannes tender port
Our ship docked in the bay and we waited our turn for the tender boats taking the cruisers ashore. Tendering is not one of my favourite things, because the cues to get a tender ticket are long and then sometimes it feels like you're wasting so much time waiting for a tender boat when you could be exploring your new city. But the tenders in Cannes were quick and efficient.
We arrived at a port harbour alongside a yacht club of Super Yachts. AND I MEAN SUPER YACHTS!!!!! Yacht after yacht along the dock must have been worth millions of dollars and they were parked off catching the sun in Cannes. Some looked closed up, but most had crew or visitors aboard, and yachts were being cleaned to perfection.
We took advantage of the free port wifi and messaged my friend Kim. She was only about 300 meters from us and we met her outside the Palace of Festivals and Congress of Cannes. It is a huge exhibition and trade centre right on the waterfront.
Me and Kim
We were so excited to see each other and stopped for a quick coffee at a corner cafe. 4.50 Euro per coffee is no joke. But Kim covered the bill while we chatted and made friends with 2 Chihuahuas belonging to the owner of the coffee shop.
Kim is a professional Yacht Steward trainer and runs her business from Antibes. She spent 15 years travelling the world on Super Yachts before moving to France and starting her training business.
Walk ways to Le Suquet Quarter
We wanted to see some of the old town of Cannes so we walked toward Le Suquet Quarter. We followed winding cobbles streets up the hill through quaint buildings with shuttered windows and Juliette balconies. As we reached the top of the hill the view opened up to see the Bay below scattered with yachts and our ship in the distance. To our left was the town of Cannes squashed up along the coast.
Views of Cannes
We entered the grounds of the Catholic Church and joined the man tourists as we climbed the steps of the walls to get an even better view of the town and suburbs below.
The Catholic Church
A friendly seagull insisted on staying put and allowed me to get close enough to take a fabulous photo of him with Cannes in the distance. Who knew Sea Gulls could be friendly? Back home our seagulls are out to steal your food, not pose for photos.
Hello Buddy!
We continued our walk back along a different path into the shopping area of Cannes. I think I found my favourite dress shop in the world in one of the back streets. To be honest it's one of the only places that I bought anything on our trip, so it was definitely worth the wait.
Walking back to the shopping district
After another coffee with Kim and following up on a couple emails we said goodbye to my dearest old friend and made our way to the beach. My husband was adamant that he was going to swim. For a surfer who had been on a cruise ship for 9 days already, he was definitely exhibiting withdrawal symptoms.

The closest beach was right alongside the harbour and was called Sunset Point Plage du midi. The beach is interrupted with man-made rocky breakwaters that make each part of the beach feel more exclusive. They also have a practical purpose of calming the waves that may enter the bay.
Beach Selfies
After a swim and some sun and some kindle reading we walked back to the harbour to find our tender boat. We noticed a very brightly painted Site Seeing bus, but this was one stop that we were quite happy to take it easy, visit with our friend and relax on the beach.
Sight Seeing Bus
Some folk from the ship had done an excursion to Monaco, which is about an hour drive from Cannes. Feedback was not encouraging so we were quit happy with our decision. You don't want to spend most of your day on shore on a bus.
We said our goodbyes to Cannes, our only French stop on our 15 day cruise and switched gears to Spanish. Juggling the languages of 7 countries was one of the most interesting parts of this trip. Do you remember which countries we had already visited?
Next stop BARCELONA!!!πͺπΈ
