John Carter from Mars is a character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs (yes, the very same writer that came up with Tarzan) that has captivated the imagination of many, many people throughout the years and has inspired tons of people ever since (approximately since 1912). Perhaps subconsciously, maybe on purpose, but Mr. Burroughs has yet another character creation under his sleeve called Pellucidar, about a wild world beneath the earth.
Well, nobody knows if they were created on purpose based on these two worlds (John Carter and Pellucidar), but DC Comics has two stories with two characters that take various aspects of the two Edgar creations, and develop their own comic books... one of them is The Warlord.
--- THE WARLORD ---
Travis Morgan is a veteran war pilot who, during a flight above the north pole, ends up crossing the earth's crust and enters a wild world where danger and magic are the daily bread, this place is called Skartaris. In here, Travis joins the people fighting against the warlock tyrant called Deimos. We can definitely notice fragments based in John Carter and Pellucidar, but we can also hint at Conan the Barbarian by Robert E. Howard.
With many adventures by sword or cape, wild beasts and action, Mike Grell really comes up with a great idea that later on Bruce Jones would revive and Bart Sears would draw... Definitely a must read, at least a few numbers until you find out if it catches you.
