Nerd By Northwest #349 – “Poor Life Choices”
(Click on the image to see the full-size version)
"I guess you're okay" remark is based in part off an old manager I worked with years ago. The guy was a retired Army colonel, and if you did your job well, the way you were supposed to without any headaches or problems, his response would be to say "adequate job". And if you really outperformed, he just might praise you with an "adequate-plus"! (who says military people don't have a sense of humor? 😁)
As for meeting the parents, I'm happy to say that I have not been a "Skyler"-level of regret for a girlfriend introducing me to her parents (or if I was, they were really good at hiding it!). And likewise, I haven't had a girlfriend who's bombed like that in meeting my folks. But I have had friends that freaked my folks out a bit. Not in being obnoxious, but rather due to their eccentric choice in hairstyle and such. The most dramatic example being a ten-inch multicolored mohawk with lip, eyebrow, and nose piercings. You could almost see my stepdad's brain rebooting in the attempt to process what his eyes were seeing...
Lastly, can anyone guess what classic movie the line "did you eat paint chips as a kid" is originally from? Hint: If you were around for the 90's, at least in the USA, you've almost certainly seen it.

'Okay' is high praise from some people. My kids have not done too bad for partners so I didn't get to play the shocked father.

My kids aren't that old yet. But at ages 15 and 10, that possibility is becoming very real very soon... 😏

@northwestnomad, I sent you anI agree with the first part of mohawk boy's rant.
I totally do as well. Well okay not ALL the money, but certainly anything not necessary for direct defense of the nation (which is unfortunately the majority of it). And sadly with DoD directive 5240.01, it looks like some of said money potentially goes to military intelligence components being used domestically "to support response efforts". Just like some of us warned of, the military assets and tools being used in the GWOT (Global War on Terror) are gradually being turned inward on us. Truly troubling. I wish there was a funny spin I could put on this, but I can't see one...
I've moved on from minarchist night watchman state ideas to full-on anarchism. No service is so essential it justifies an extortion-funded monopoly! But I also know that view is a small minority opinion.
