Is the first issue of Usher of the Dead worth reading? This horror comic by Keith Rommel is an innovative adaptation of short story of the same name. This tale centers on a haunted house where the dead reincarnate and a cursed man resides. It features halls lined with coffins and rotten bodies. A graphic novel adaptation would be more than worth reading, and this story is sure to leave readers wanting more.
The story is told in flashback. The unnamed narrator approaches the house of Usher on a gloomy day. The estate of Roderick Usher is haunted and seems to have taken on the atmosphere of decaying trees and murky ponds. Although the house is a solid structure, it has a tiny crack from the roof to the ground. The narrator begins the novel by investigating a mysterious death that has occurred in the house of Usher.
The unsettling quality of the Usher of the Dead comics is heightened by Usher's pink spectacles and maniacal facial expressions. Corben's style of writing is a step above Poe's, and he managed to create a work of art that is uniquely his own. I think the story will continue to be as good as its predecessors. As such, I give Usher of the Dead #1 a 3.5/5.
