RE: Nerd By Northwest #246 – “Rise of the ‘Church of Woke'”

'in large part'? Remember that the internet magnifies extreme views. I don't think all Republicans are rampant racists, but any that are will get disproportionate coverage. There are troublemakers everywhere who will use any causes as an excuse. Don't get me started on religion.

I will judge Biden and Harris on their actions too. I'm not lowering my standards just because the last few years have been to tragi-comical. Of course I have no say in US politics, but what goes on there still matters. Have you seen the fuss over Biden not keeping a Churchill bust in the Oval office? Churchill would not have been impressed by those shouting the loudest about it.

I agree, and I'm certainly not saying everyone (or even the majority) who ascribes to the "woke" mindset is in it for selfish reasons. In fact I think many or most who are drawn towards it do it because they want to do good and yearn to be part of something bigger than themselves. I say "in large part" because the troublemakers & selfish power-seekers in the group are heavily & disproportionately represented in positions of influence & leadership, with their hands on the steering wheel of said movement. As for the non-sociopaths, all too often once you're in the "tribe", one tends to rationalize the negative actions & rhetoric (or "go along to get along") for fear of being judged or ostracized by their peers. Not really any different than the usual social dynamic in political and some religious groups.

Hadn't heard about the Churchill bust fuss. And like you, I have no idea why anyone would care... 😕
