Autism spectrum disorder is a neurological disorder, which means that it’s not caused by a germ or a virus. It could be caused by problems during pregnancy, abnormalities in the development of the brain, or imbalances in the brain’s chemical transmitters.
Although there isn’t a “cure” for autism, early intervention and treatment help improve communication and social interaction. When appropriate, medication may also help with symptoms such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, irritability, and self-harm.
