‘Mommy, Halloween is my favourite day of the year": A mother-daughter story [ENGLISH only]
Imagine living in a country where Halloween is not a native celebration, and where in many cases, it even generates controversy (as in some Christian or Catholic schools) but, at the same time, it is your daughter's favourite day of the whole year; and she enjoys it and celebrates it more, than even Christmas Day or her own birthday.... They say that children are the joy of life? I think I agree with that definition, but if you add to that fact, fun and having a really good time with your friends; dressing up is something more...
This is the story I will try to tell from the point of view of my 9 year old daughter. A little girl, who since spring, (April/May) already starts to remind me that Halloween is coming in October and that it's time for me not to forget it.... I'm not lying when I tell you that this is the most awaited day of the year for her. I attribute this to the influence (thank God, I might add) of Michael Jackson's Thriller (yes, the music video; especially the original 7+ minute long one) and Vampirina, a cartoon she used to watch (and still watches when I don't) when she was even more of a child.
Yesterday that little girl was an absolute queen. From the moment she opened her eyes when she woke up, the first thing she said to me was ‘Mommy, Halloween is my favourite day of the year... It's finally here! It's finally here!’ She even wanted me to put dark make-up on her eye area and eyelids to go to school.... Haha, she's in third grade, not long ago learned to tie her shoelaces by herself, and already wishes she looked like Merlin Adams.... My God, how kids grow up, it's completely crazy.... Clearly, I didn't allow her to wear make-up to school....
She (she, my child, the protagonist of this day and of this story) came home from school, took off her uniform and ran into the shower... There are very, very few occasions where that event happens like that; with spontaneity.... I knew it was due to the excitement of putting on her Catrina costume that I had made for her all year.... But it was only 12:30 in the afternoon... Too early to dress up. I mentioned to her, that at the dance academy, she would have a surprise that would fascinate her, but that I was not allowed to tell her anything; to wait for the surprise and hope for the best for this day. She, naturally excited, nodded but her beautiful eyes gave her away: emotion is transparent in children. And all fathers and mothers know it....
So, we had lunch, rested the food; I made the ‘attempt’ to take a nap but my little girl's anxiety did not give me the peace my sleep deserved... So, I got out of bed, took a long, restorative shower, and sat on the bed with my daughter: Halloween make-up officially began. She was totally thrilled to see her own transformation in the mirror and loved the result. Too bad I didn't take a before and after picture at the time.... But I assure you that as I was doing her make-up her face was filling with excitement and joy. Just what I had in mind for her.
Around 4pm, we had finished all the preparations.... Finally, my spooky but beautiful daughter was wearing her costume. She looked gorgeous with the details and the headband adorning her hair. Not because she's my daughter, and not to compete, but in dance class, at the academy, all the other girls were dressed up in Halloween costumes but none of them matched my baby. Few things spark genuine happiness in my daughter (besides playing Roblox and Minecraft; and watching Frozen), so I kept taking pictures and cheering her on, who would have thought? Her enjoying her special day, and me treasuring in my mind and heart the joy she experiences. This is a mother-daughter relationship, it's more than just a day of celebration, it's love and memories.
Halloween generates some controversy because of everything you say, but I think we have to let children enjoy the holiday, even if it is not indigenous, to see them with the illusion of having a fun day and dressing up in scary costumes. I think the younger ones take it more lightly and don't worry about these conflicts over religious beliefs. The main thing is to have fun.
But how beautiful it looks. How cute, glad you enjoyed your favorite day. Did you get a lot of candy?
I think you mean my kiddo... And not quite, hun... She enjoyed a couple of sweets but it was more about playing and having good time than eating candies. Thank you for stopped by, love!
Yes, of course, I meant your daughter, but the translator betrayed me.
