Greetings dear mothers and fathers of motherhood community.
Today I thought much on the issue of child abduction in my locality. During ember months and festive periods like this, lots of stories about child abduction are being spread. Last two weeks, a friend was telling me about a young girl that was abducted at the front of their building few minutes after returning from school. Last week Thursday, a 3 year old girl was also abducted in my area. Families and neighbors have searched everywhere but till now no sight of her. These stories left me thinking about my own kids and how to protect them from this tragedy.
Child abduction is an illegal taking of a child by an individual often with the intention of detaining or concealing the child. This act violates the rights of a child and brings pains both to the child and members of the family. As I watched the depressed faces of little 3 years old Chizaram's parents, I realized that the trauma that comes from looking for your child is something no parent would ever want to experience.
In order to protect my children from this form of abuse, I have taken some safety precautions.
- To always keep a close eye on my children especially in public places.
- I educate them on safety rules like not talking to strangers and not accepting anything from them.
- I always make sure my home is secure by ensuring that all doors and windows are locked. I also instruct them not to open the door during my absence.
- Building a good relationship with my neighbors have also been helpful because it make it easier for me to encourage them to keep an eye on my kids.
You too can add this to your own safety precautions or even suggest more. Our children safety is a top priority and being prepared can make a big difference. Just like me, I am sure no one will ever want his/her child to be a victim of child abduction.
