¡Hola amigos de esta hermosa comunidad! Hoy estamos muy felices en casa ayer porque finalmente bautizamos a Gael. Digo finalmente pues teníamos previsto hacerlo en otra fecha, pero por motivos familiares tuvimos que posponerlo. Yo soy muy devota a la Virgen de la Caridad, y quería que el bautizo de mi hijo fuera en el santuario dedicado a ella en La Habana. En esa iglesia dan pocos turnos para bautizos, por lo que tuvimos que esperar un poco y visitar las oficinas de la iglesia hasta que hubo disponibilidad.

Hello friends of this beautiful community! Today we are very happy at home because yesterday we finally baptized Gael. I say finally because we had planned to do it on another date, but for family reasons we had to postpone it. I am very devoted to the Virgin of Charity, and I wanted my son's baptism to be in the sanctuary dedicated to her in Havana. In that church they give few turns for baptisms, so we had to wait a bit and visit the church offices until there was availability.

Como el bautizo era bien temprano en la mañana, debía quedar todo preparado con antelación. Aunque nuestros planes eran muy sencillos, en los últimos tiempos se ha vuelto muy difícil encontrar cosas que puedan emplearse para un buffet, ya sean elaborados o los ingredientes para hacer las preparaciones, por lo que, desde antes fuimos haciendo un listado de aquellos elementos que podíamos necesitar.

On the other hand, we didn't want the day to be overlooked so we set about preparing something simple to share with some family and friends at home. Since the baptism was very early in the morning, everything had to be prepared in advance. Although our plans were very simple, in recent times it has become very difficult to find things that can be used for a buffet, whether they are prepared or the ingredients to make the preparations, so we made a list of those items we might need beforehand.

Nos levantamos bien temprano y fuimos mi padre y yo a comprar un cake, mientras mi esposo se quedó en casa cuidando al bebé. Buscamos en varios lugares valorando cual era la mejor oferta, pues los precios han subido enormemente. Finalmente encontramos uno de nata montada y chocolate. Además del cake, compramos unas galletas saladas. Al regreso, aproveché la presencia de mi esposo para preparar una pasta para las galletas y unas croquetas de picadillo de pollo, que acá en Cuba gustan mucho.

We got up very early and my father and I went to buy a cake, while my husband stayed at home taking care of the baby. We looked in several places to see what was the best deal, as prices have gone up enormously. We finally found one with whipped cream and chocolate. In addition to the cake, we bought some crackers. On the way back, I took advantage of my husband's presence to prepare a dough for the cookies and some chicken picadillo croquettes, which are very popular here in Cuba.

Mi mamá, desde Pinar del Río también fue resolviendo cosas para los preparativos. Ella debía llegar ese día en la noche y ayudarme a terminar todo lo que quedara pendiente. Allá compró unos panes dulces, galletas dulces y unas barras de dulce de guayaba pues yo quería hacer unas empanadas rellenas con guayaba.

My mother, from Pinar del Rio, was also working on the preparations. She had to arrive that day at night and help me finish everything that was pending. There she bought some sweet breads, sweet cookies and some guava candy bars because I wanted to make some guava-filled empanadas.

A pesar de haber planificado todos los detalles, siempre algo falla, o te lleva a pensar en un plan B. El ómnibus en el que venía mi mamá de Pinar del Río se atrasó por falta de combustible, por lo que tuve que cambiar el plan de hacer las empanadas de guayaba y terminé haciendo una especie de galletas de manteca que en Cuba conocemos como torticas de Morón y que a todos les gusta muchísimo.

Despite having planned all the details, something always goes wrong, or leads you to think of a plan B. The bus my mother was on from Pinar del Río was late due to lack of fuel, so I had to change the plan to make guava empanadas and I ended up making a kind of butter cookies that in Cuba we know as torticas de Morón and that everyone likes very much.

Llegado el gran día, nos levantamos igual de temprano para alistarnos y llegar a tiempo. Por suerte, la iglesia queda cerca de mi casa y movernos hacia allá no iba a ser complejo. En cuanto llegamos confirmamos la presencia del niño con un muchacho que estaba en la puerta chequeando los nombres de los que iban a ser bautizados ese día. Primero llegamos nosotros, una amiga y el padrino de Gael. La madrina no pudo estar presente pues estaba en la grabación de una película y no pudo llegar en tiempo.

When the big day arrived, we got up just as early to get ready and arrive on time. Luckily, the church is close to my house and getting there was not going to be difficult. As soon as we arrived we confirmed the presence of the child with a boy who was at the door checking the names of those who were going to be baptized that day. We arrived first, along with a friend and Gael's godfather. The godmother could not be present because she was at a movie shooting and could not arrive on time.

En un inicio, el padre tuvo un conversatorio con los todos los presentes, explicándoles la importancia de bautizar a los niños y lo que significaba recibir este sacramento. Terminada la charla, las familias de forma individual y por el listado fueron accediendo a la capilla bautismal. Nosotros fuimos los terceros. La ceremonia fue sencilla, pero muy bonita. Al final el padre nos obsequió una vela que encendimos durante la ceremonia y que solo se debe volver a encender el día en que Gael reciba su primera comunión.

At the beginning, the father had a conversation with everyone present, explaining the importance of baptizing children and what it meant to receive this sacrament. After the talk, the families individually and by the list were accessing the baptismal chapel. We were the third. The ceremony was simple, but very beautiful. At the end the priest gave us a candle that we lit during the ceremony and that should only be lit again the day Gael receives his first communion.

De ahí nos fuimos todos para mi casa, y como era de esperar, hicimos un brindis con un vino espumoso, sin alcohol, pues Gael es lactancia materna exclusiva, y atacamos literalmente la mesa. Casi no quedó nada, y debo decir que el cake estaba delicioso. Pasamos un día maravilloso en familia. No podemos estar más felices. Gracias por permitirme compartir con ustedes este momento tan hermoso en nuestras vidas.

From there we all went home, and as expected, we made a toast with a sparkling wine, without alcohol, because Gael is exclusively breastfeeding, and we literally attacked the table. There was almost nothing left, and I must say that the cake was delicious. We had a wonderful family day. We couldn't be happier. Thank you for allowing me to share with you this beautiful moment in our lives.
